John's 28 July 2011 shot problem.

John, I managed to sight-solve this one (very unusual for me, alas). It is a spectacular shot, especially since it occurred in a real game. A nice waiting move and the sting at the tail end of the combination is quite pretty.

Here's what I got (it took me awhile).

Black to move and win:

7-11 21x14, 12-16 19x3K, 2-7 3x10, 6x31K 13x6, 1x17 and Red should win (I think).

I think that is probably correct; if not, I can't find anything else...I've shot my bolt.

Great problem.

Jason, very good! I like the "flip" option like you have in the weekly random game.

Yes, Gary, that's correct. Here's another sight-solver, an old one:
(29 July shot problem):

R: 2, 6, 7, 8, 9, 10,12,14
W: 15, 18, 19, 20, 21, 23, 30, 31

Sorry, John. It wasn't a sight-solver for me, at least not completely.

9-13 18x9, 13-17 21x14, 6x13 15x6, 2x27 31x24 and then 7-10 (I think) gives Red the opposition but it's a tricky ending anyway and requires some care (or maybe not, but it did for me...).

Thanks. Nice problem.

If you guys are enjoying these random games, I added something to front page of icheckers.net that pulls random games from my endgame database. You can click "new game" to get a new problem and even click "maximize" to get full playback options. I am sorta addicted to it. Enjoy

Eric, thanx for the update and explanation. I thought those were "screen shots." : -)

In 1958 my friend Matt Long pulled a shot on J. C. Monroe while playing in The Denvir Master Mail Tourney. Here is the position:

J. C. Monroe -Red: 2,3,10,11,15,21,17,27K

Matt Long- White: 30,26,22,13,20,12,18, 1K and it is white's move

Now White goes 26-23 (A), 17-26, 13-9, 15-22, 1-5, 27-18, 30-7, 3-10,

9-6, 2-9, 5-16, White Wins

(A) Starts a big stroke that takes eleven pieces off the board and shocks Mr. Monroe.

Bill, Matt Long really enjoyed solving problems and composing problems but maybe his best problem was this as it came up in actual play.

All the best,

Sorry I didn't put diagram but I didn't know how to get the diagram into the forum after setting up the position.

John,
That one was good enough for a contest entry.
