Al Darrow in Rehab

Post by Palomino »

Image

I want to let everyone know that Al Darrow is now having rehab at the Chestelm Health Care & Rehabilitation Center, 534 Town Street, East Haddam, CT. Al's is in room number 20 and his phone number there is (860) 873-6422.

If you have seen the movie "The Checker King" there is an interview with Al 30 minutes into the movie.

If you haven't seen the movie, follow the below link.
(You will have to watch the sponsor's message before the movie starts.)

I'm sure Al would appricate a call or card from you.

Al went into the hospital last Sunday night (a.m. Monday) and was there 4 days. Al had a problem with his hip, it became swollen, causing excruciating pain and he had to call for an ambulance in the middle of the night.

Al hopes to be home and back with his wife Peggy soon but expects his stay in the rehabilitation center to last at least all of this week. Arrangements are already in place for him to receive physical therapy twice a week or so once he gets home.

If you would like to send Al a get well card to his home, his address is:

Al Darrow
1 Acorn Drive
East Haddam, Ct 06423

I'm sure Peggy will make sure he gets it if it arrives before he returns home.

Al is a very good friend of mine and I wish him my best and a speedy recovery.

Get well soon Al  ..."Pal"

Thanks, Pal, for the information.

Al Darrow is one of the good guys. Although we have never met in person, he was one of the first people to contact me when I joined the ACF Forum and I have always enjoyed talking to him.

His encyclopedic knowledge of checkers is astounding and I think he probably owns (and has read!) every book ever printed on the game; a man after my own heart with an appreciation of the benefits of ink on paper!

A gentleman of the old school.

Get well soon Al....my ol pal,

Al Darrow is one of the nice guys and the "salt of the earth" where checkers is concerned. You dont need to be a Grand master to be a good checker man cos thats what Al is.

I wish some of the better players would take a leaf outa Al s book as he is someone to be looked up to,an educated well mannered honest man.He is a role model. I hope Al is on the mend soon and wish him "all the best" that he is back home in recovery soon.

All,

At Pal's request, my comments on The Checker King movie were moved to Pal's Link to movie "THE CHECKER KING" thread, which is a better place for them.

Good idea, Pal. It's always a pleasure.

What do you like about checkers?: I enjoy learning more and more as i go. despite its alleged simplicity the game is incredibly complex and rewarding.

This is an exceptional film, Pal, as I'm sure you well know. Poignant and sad, it says a lot about the human condition and the human spirit and about the redemptive power of the game we play. Amazing.

I was not familiar with this movie at all (very professionally produced, by the way; a fine piece of work); had never even heard of it (which surprises me), so thanks for the link, Pal. Just another service (of the many) that you perform for the game and the ACF.

All people who play checkers should watch this film (it is only thirty-nine minutes); perhaps even more importantly, people who don't play checkers should watch it as well; it might tell them something about the impact and importance of our game.

Thanks again, Palomino. It is always a pleasure.
I agree Gary very nice film. Thanks for sharing with us Pal , and my oh my everyone i saw there looked a lot younger :). Thoroughly recommendable to everyone.

Checkout the checkers joke around the 10 minute mark :D
- I saw this couple sitting in a car in the dark playing checkers.
- how did you know they were playing checkers if it was dark?
- I heard her say, "if you make another move like that I'll crown you"

MUAHAHAHA First class checkers joke.... love it.

cheers and I hope Mr Darrow is well by now.

Update:

Al did not answer his phone at the Chestelm Health Care & Rehabilitation Center yesterday or this morning so I call their office and learned he is at home now.

I called Al's cell phone and spoke with him for a few minutes. He seems to be doing fairly well and told me that he came home Tuesday.
