"Knowing William Payne"--answer
Most of what we know about William Payne comes to us through this mans writings. "Checker Trivia question of the Day". Who was this noted author? (Cont.)

And we don't know much about Mr. Payne, do we?
We (checker players) know him for writing the book "An Introduction to the Game of Draughts" in 1756.
William Payne aslo wrote the book "An Introduction to Geometry" in 1767.
Both books were sold by his brother, Thomas: "Honest Tom Payne" (1719 - 1799) a well-known bookseller in 18th century London. His premises were notoriously small, but exceptionally popular with literati of that period, to the point where his shop became a sort of club during the day for discussions on all subjects. He retired to Finchley in 1790 leaving the business in the hands of his son, also Thomas Payne (1752 - 1831), and died in 1799. He is buried at St Mary
