Missing and interesting opportunities in San Remo, Rd 1-2.

Post by Alex_Moiseyev »

The following is a small and certainly not full collection of interesting moments happened in Sam Remo in first two rounds rounds. I will continue these series.

=============================================================================
Round 1.

#1. Rd1, G1. G. Owens vs L. Kondlo
Image
White to move and draw

30-26 here is OK for draw, but Mr. Kondlo played losing 19-16?, 12x19, 27-23 and now Mr. Owens had an an exceptional chance to win the game against grandmaster by jumping 19x26*. Instead, he jumped other way 18x27? which leads only to draw and eventually even lost the game.

#2. Rd1, G1. R. Tovagliero vs S. Scarpetta
Image
Red to move and draw

One move before Sergio had a a fine win by 6-1* but missed it playing 6-2? See diagram #2. Here Roberto had a "one second draw" by playing 12-16* and freeing the King. Instead, he played losing 32-28? and lost after 30-25*, 22-26, 31x22, 28-24, 23-18, 24x31, 18-15 etc WW

#3. Rd1, G1. J. Francis vs F. Kareta
Image
White to move and draw.

Draw was till available here by unusual 23-19, 13-17, 27-23, 17-22, 14-9, 5x14, 18x9, 22-26, 9-6 etc Draw. Mr F. Kareta instead played losing 14-9? 5x14, 18x9 and immediately lost after 1-5!

#4. Rd1, G2. S. Scarpetta vs R. Tovagliaro
Image
White to move and draw.

Very valuable and instructive position. 31-27? here as played in the game loses, but pretty 18-14 leads to unusual man draw after 11-15, 20-16, 15-19, 22-18*, 17-21, 18-15, 10x17, 15-11, 7-10, 11-7 etc Draw

=============================================================================
Round 2.

#5. Rd2, G1. A. Bishop vs F. Kareta
Image
White to move and win

Mr. Kareta missed here a win by 22-18* and drewed the game after 29-25?, 10-14, 25-21, 3-7, 22-18, 6-10*, 18x9, 7-11, 23-18, 16x23, 18-14, 10x17 Draw

#6. Rd2, G1. I. Zachos vs J. Morrison
Image
Red to move and draw.

11-16 is Ok for easy and immediate draw but Ingo lost it after 7-10, 26-23* with no escape.

#7. Rd2, G1, B. Durdyev vs . Martinov
Image
White to move and draw

Igor Martinov lost here after 30-25?, 11-15, 32-28, 15x24, 28x19, 7-11 etc RW. Draw in position on diagram was still there by 32-28*, 11-16 (11-15, 23-18 etc Draw), 22-18* and red can't win.

#8. Rd2, G1. F. Kareta vs A. Bishop
Image
White to move and draw.

White had a clear draw here after 17-14, 10x17, 21x5, 11-16, 32-28 etc Draw. Instead American master Anthony Bishop ... resigned !!!

#9. Rd2, G1. C. Ciampi vs S. Scarpetta
Image
Red to move.

Good example how just one bad move can ruin the whole game at the earlier stage. Mr. Ciampi played here 10-14? and after 19-15* any reasonable draw here seems to be doubtful. Instead, 8-12 on diagram was completely OK ... until another missing opportunity arise !

#10A. Rd2, G2. I. Martinov vs B. Durdyev ....... #10B
Image ................... Image
White to move ...................................... Red to move

Romantic game opened by 12-16! (thanks, Igor) where both partners missed a win and draw appears to be a logical result of game  On diagram #10A Bashim can win by 32-27* but instead played 29-25? On diagram #10B Igor can win by 10-14 or 3-7 but instead played 10-15 to draw.

#11. Rd2, G2. G. Owens vs R. Tovagliaro
Image
White to move.

Position where draw were agreed (or maybe recording stopped ?)

What do you like about checkers?: I enjoy learning more and more as i go. despite its alleged simplicity the game is incredibly complex and rewarding.

Alex , your analysis is greatly appreciated and this couple of threads will keep me busy for a while.....
I am slowly improving ,(baby steps) my level is still very low (lack of time, due to family commitments etc etc is the biggest culprit)

( i was just telling someone on facebook i was proud as punch to win a game on second position) but analysis like this makes the old grey matter bounce around and maybe this old dog can learn a new trick or two.

thanks :)

Alex, you are wrong in my first game against Jim I had a draw for a long time with the 14-17 shot, but I thought I was winning and miscalculated.
The move order given on the game applet is wrong.

If so - then all my comments to this game indeed cannot be counted and considered. At least my publication will force organisers to correct wrong reporting.

I also do not ptretend to say that all my analyses and verdicts are 100% correct and accurate. In addition - It is very possible that I "missed missings  " and collection can grew. Everyone is welcome, wanted and highly appreciated to join party and put their analyses here.

Game itself is the most important component and part of business and all after all - thats what checkers is about and thats why we all are here.

Judging first rounds, you have to know it started raining very heavily and loud.
It was not able to talk without shouting, and concentration was not easy...

What do you like about checkers?: I love strategy games and checkers fits the bill for a great strategy game, that requires logic and problem solving skills.

Ingo, do you mind giving us the correct move order on the above game and/or any other games on the applet that you know to be off? Thanks
