Missing and interesting opportunities in San Remo, Rd. 7-8

Post by Alex_Moiseyev »

This article is last in my series about all missings and interesting moments happened in Sam Rem0 GAYP QT 2011. It was an exciting event which collected all world class players and generated an exciting high calibre standard games. At this point any missing and error occured is very exceptional and it make it double interesting and educatale.

We have to study not only "right" moves but also "wrong moves" in order to prevent them in future: this is the only way to learn game and improve.

===========================================================================================================
Round 7.

#1. Rd.7, G1. S. Scarpetta vs A. Berdiyeva
Image
White to move.

Well played by Sergio in the beginning of game. Here Amangul supposed to play 30-25 or 31-27, but lost the game after 32-28? 9-13 and white shoud resign now ! WOW

#2. Rd.7, G1. L. Kondlo vs C. Ciampi
Image
White to move and win.

Here Mr. Ciampi missed an excellent chance to score on grandmaster by playing 31-26*, 16-19, 32-28 (26-22 also wins). But win was missed after white played 30-26?, 16-19, 27-23 etc Draw.

#3. Rd.7, G1. G. Owens vs B. Durdyev
Image
Red to move.

This is position where draw was agreed and more likely red missed a win or great winning chances after 6-9*.

#4. Rd.7, G2. A. Berdiyeva vs S. Scarpetta
Image
Red to jump and draw.

Red should try to minimize freedom of white pieces and pyramid on the left flank by playing 2x11*. Amangul jumped another way, 3x10 allowing Sergio eventually trade 19-15 and win the game.

#5. Rd. 7, G2. J. Francis vs J. Morrison
Image
White to move.

From win to loss: Jim played here 15-11???, 20-24, 28x19, 17-22, 10x17, 26-30 RW Sometimes checkers are very painful. Typical Jack "clever win"

#6. Rd.7, G2. R. Beckwith vs F. Kareta
Image
White to move and draw.

This position is well known to PP from Single Corner. White had not an easy draw after 24-19, but missed it by playing 14-9?, 5x23, 27x18, 20x27, 32x23, 8-11, 16-12, 10-15, 18-14, 16-19 etc WW

#7. Rd.7, G2. A. Bishop vs I. Martinov
Image
Red to move and win.

Anthony played here 2-6? and missed a win by 11-15*

#8. Rd.7, G2. L. Kondlo vs C. Ciampi
Image
White to move and draw.

Last time in game where white can still survive safely by playing 28-24*. Instead, Mr. Caimpi played here losing 30-26? and lost pretty after 2-7, 21-17, 18-22!, 25x18, 12-16 etc, RW

#9. Rd.7, G2. I. Zachos vs R. Tovagliero.
Image
White to move

Interesting position which has it's great theoretical value.I know I can be seriously criticize for such strange verdict, but I claim 21-17? here as an earlier loss ! After 21-17, 10-15 I was unable to locate a safe draw for white.

=======================================================================================
Round 8.

#10. Rd.8, G1. R. Tovagliaro vs J. Morrison
Image
Red to move.

This position came from 10-15, 21-17, 11-16 3-mover. Red should play here 8-11 and I really don't know if there is any scientific draw after 9-14 as played in the game. After then it seems like white didn't miss anything and played it to win.

#11. Rd.8, G1. R. Beckwith vs L. Kondlo
Image
White to move and draw.

Lubabalo choose to play weak Nailor line and in this position missed a draw with care 25-22. He played 26-23? and lost after 9-13*.

#12. Rd.8, G1. C. Ciampi vs F. Kareta.
Image
Red to play and win.

Instructive middle game mastepiece. Red had a win here 9-14, but played 10-15? allowing white to drew the game after 21-17! Instead white finally played a losing 16-12?, 15-19, 12-8, 7-10, 8-3, 10-14, 3-8, 14x30, 8x24, 30-26 etc RW

#13. Rd.8, G2. L. Kondlo vs R. Beckwith
Image
White to move.

This is technical draw even if red crowns 3rd King, but Richard played 6-9??, 14x5, 21x14, 5-9, 14x5, 15-10 RW

#14. Rd.8, G2. J. Morrison vs R. Tovagliero.
Image
White to move and draw.

White lost here after playing 19-16?. Draw was close: 20-16, 11x20, 19-15

#15. Rd8, G2. F. Kareta vs C. Ciampi
Image
White to move and draw.

This position came from FIFE. White played here 27-23? which appears to be a loss. 25-22 seems to be correct.

Hm....
the 21-17 Maid of the Mill a loss?

I agree that after Robertos 23-18 he looked quite cramped, but 24-19 may be better.

Ingo, I just thought more about 21-17 in "Made and Mill". Probably the right statemetn will be:

1) Status 21-17 - UNTESTED
2) Status 25-21 - LOSS

Losing status of 21-17 also looked suspicious to me and I spent alot of tme in the past couple days but yet - didn't comeup with 100% proved conclusion.

Here is position in question:

White to move:
Image

Q1. Can white drew the game here ?

Q2. Can white drew the game after 25-21, 4-8 ?

Answer on the 2nd question is - NO. But answer on 1st question is UNKNOWN

Re Q2 - I think Alex is right.

In my game against Bernard Coll in the German Open 2006, featuring this line, I stated in my annotations to the game the following notes:

B - In view of the play at Note E this defence may no longer be practicable for crossboard play.

In note E I showed the play I considered best, and stated that Black has the superior position though White can draw with careful play.
However, I have since concluded any draw for White as being doubtful.

I believe this game remains unpublished.

Unless I am missing something in this dialog, this line clearly draws in Basic Checkers, Var. 1 of 11-15 22-17 8-11 opening, including 25-21 & 4-8 moves. The draw line is narrow for white, but attack is fairly narrow as well. I even had this full BC line with Pat Quartucci in 2009 Florida open.

Not quite  some scope is still there.

Basic Checkers proposed 25-21, 4-8, 24-19, 15x24, 28x19, 11-16, 26-23, 18-22, 27-24 ... see diagram #1.

#1. Red to move
Image

BC gives here only 16-20, but I propose 8-11, 24-20, 7-10, 32-28, 3-7, 28-24, 11-15, 20x11, 8x15 ... See diagram #2.

#2. White to move.

Richard, white has a hard choice here between 23-18 and 24-20. Where you want to play ? Do you feel comfortable to play this (either way) cross aboard ?

====================================================================================
Hard to beat BC even with program ! It seems like a draw with great care still exists. Continue from diagram #2:

1. ... 24-20 (A) 2. 15x24 20x11 3. 12-16 23-18 4. 16-20 18-14 5. 10-15 14-9 6. 5x14 17x10 7. 24-27 31x24 8. 20x27 10-7 9. 27-32 7-3 10. 32-27 21-17*** 11. 27-23 11-7 12. 2x11 3-7 13. 11-16 17-14 Draw

(A) 23-18 probably loses by

1. 16x23 18x11 2. 23-27 24-20 3. 27-32 11-8 4. 10-15 8-3 5. 32-28 3-8 6. 28-24 8-11 7. 15-18 11-8 8. 24-19 20-16 9. 18-23 8-4 10. 19-24 16-11 11. 24-20 11-8 12. 23-27 31x24 13. 20x27 8-3 14. 12-16 RW

Pretty complicated play.
