What do you like about checkers?: I enjoy learning more and more as i go. despite its alleged simplicity the game is incredibly complex and rewarding.

Many thanks to Igor Martinov for his wonderful article on Russian checkers site shashki.com.

In this article Igor wrote:

During closing ceremony extremely disappointed Lubabalo closed his face by hand trying to hide tears and ran out of ceremony room. Igor ran too, reached him and tried to calm him down:

- You are great, but Sergio was a little more lucky.
- I dreamed all my life to be the World Champion.
- I also want to be the Champion. Maybe next time…

Kind of reminds me of Tinsley. Barely losing a championship in a crushing manner and demoralized. But of course he came back months later and dominated the game for over 40 years.

Congrats to Sergio on a great performance. After thinking about it, I don't like his chances in beating King in a match, but I think he has the talent to keep it close and interesting.

I dont think this was disappointment, but more that he was touched by the ceremony and his achievement and the warm welcome he received. He suddenly realized all this and he was more pround then diappointed at this evening.

When I talked to him he was not disappointed about his performance (after all, he had the highest tiebreaker!), but he liked San Remo and the tournament very much and in general also the level of his play.
Note that despite the loss against Richard, he fought back and took the 2nd game with fine end game play.

Note also that Jack Francis took his cap off and looks quite pround, despite "only" finishing 3rd, but he made a very good performance as well.

I dont think these were tears of diappointment, but rather of happiness.

Perhaps we all need to "learn to lose before we learn to win"

Tommy,

I think these are really tears of happiness he tries to hold back.

After all, it was a very touching moment.
All players were called to the podium individually, even those without a podium place, received a very warm personal applouse and were shot by numerous cameras.

And the three medal winners each received further attention and special certificates and plates, as well as additional applouse, in all three events.
And at the end the natinal anthem of the winner was played, much like at the Olympic games.

I think he was simply deeply touched by it.
If u look at Jack Francis you can also see that he is pround and happy and touched, as is, of course, Sergio.

Both Lubabalo and Jack congratulated Sergio, and both agreed that he was a deserved winner.
At this level one bad move is already decisive for the tournament victory.

I know that Lubabalo liked the whole event and the place very much.
He had a long, adventuresome travel, as his intial flight to Nice via London had to be booked back when he was already at the airport in Cape Town. He had to find a place for the night there, and thanks to Richard Beckwith, he got a flight to Nice via Madrid, but he arrived too late to play at the San Remo Open.

Lubabalo was not only watching his own games, but also enjoyed watching the games of other players, and he especially liked the panoramic view on the rooftop, where he often could be found.

I also think that he will be a contender for the World Championship in the future, and I hope he can make it too many QT's and internatinal events in the future. He is a great player, and though he was not happy to lose (who is?), he took it with pride and fought back to win the next game in fine style.

Maybe, but Igor who calm down Lubabalo said that it was a real disappoiment which has nothing to do with happiness at all.

Personally id imagine Lubablo was MORE disappointed more for the people who worked so hard to get him there [Alan,Rich, and so forth] rather than himself thats why he cried tears of sorrow Ingo. And fair play to him theres no need to feel that way cos everyone helped for the good of checkers and SA draughts .So no worries theres always next time.........and we ve gotta " learn to lose and learn to win" all at the same time ,thats emotion hmmmmmm. Do Germans do emotion i wonder?? Lets take a vote on that.

In my eyes, there are three major factors which contribute to become a champion.

1) Real level of play, skills, knowledges
2) Champion attitude: killer instinct
3) Luck

You have to have all three of them in order to succeed. Perhaps Lubabalo didn't have all othem in place in San Remo. Next time. It's long and painful way to go. Many tried and only very few were successful.

I wish Sergio, Lubabalo, Miki, Shane and all other "young guns" good luck in their journey.

And indeed I wish good luck to Suki, myself and Amangul  You should have luck to get match and win title, but you need double luck to keep title ! As more players try to reach peak - more competition - better for checkers.

============================================================================================

If I were in Lubabalo shoes, Instead crying I would drink alot  and after get completely drunk - smiling at closing ceremony.

Respectfully,

Can you imagine me or Ron crying ? Lubabalo still has plenty area for improvement, and most important - killer instinct. Real and true killer has a "cold head" and never give emotions to take over.

Hi Alex,

Have you ever considered a career as a movie actor?

I think you would make a great James Bond villain.

Best Wishes,

Dennis
