2012 Pa State

Post by Jason Solan »

For any of those who normally attend the PA state or are planning on attending it this year I've got a few questions.
I brought some of these up at the last tournament, but didn't get much response one way or the other from most of the people there.

I'm looking to try it on Friday-Saturday instead of Saturday-Sunday this year.
In the past it had been a 3 day tournament (Friday-Sunday), but I don't think there are enough players to go back to that format. However I've been told there are some Amish players who might participate, but are unable to play on Sundays.

I'm planning on holding it at a high school in Millersville, Pa (just outside of Lancaster) which is about an hour east from last years venue.
Because of holding it in a high school and on a Friday I'd need to push it back to the 3rd weekend of June (the 15-16th) rather than the 2nd weekend like it usually is.
Also the closest motels would be a few miles from the school so players would need to drive to the playing room each morning. I'm sure we can probably work out a carpooling system though.

I'm looking at trying to block of some rooms at nearby motels soon, so if anyone has any objections please let me know.

I have no problem paying for the same venue as last year either which should be available the 2nd weekend of June, I'm just trying to branch out and hopefully get more Pa players.

Hey Jason,
Hope all has been well.....I believe trying to accomodate the PA. Amish may be a lesson in futility.....there is not only the issue of Sundays, but the fact that there is money and cash prizes involved. This hurdle might not be able to be "overcome" regarding PA. Amish participation....

Capture Friday instead Sunday cause an extra business day and potential vacation conflict and shortage.

Weren't there cash prizes at the Indiana tournament? I know we had a few Amish players there, though I don't know offhand if they accepted prize money.
No clue at all sure about the Indiana Tourney, or the Indiana Amish...but I am 95% certain that the PA. Amish will not compete for, or participate in, any function that includes cash prizes.....

Also not sure, but if it's true then it's totally wrong and someone should explain to our Amish collegeaus that checkers has nothing to do with gambling at all ! This is serious respectable business and there is nothing wrong to be paid for good and hard work.

I have made deliveries to probably 50 different Amish businesses in the last 5 years. Currently,at least 2 per day, 3 days per week.......
If I could get a PA. Amishman to put down his hand tools, or get off his horse driven farm equiptment,(etc., etc.) and try explain to him how playing Checkers is "hard work", in between the hysterical laughing and the consternation, I would probably be thrown off the farm.....

Dear Jay,

it is quite easy: if you (you!) don't consider checkers seriously then you can't tell others and argue well. It seems to me that you don't believe checkers is serious professional business.

Dear Alex,
Since the last several posts were between us, I believe you are addressing me...(Joe ??)
I love the game and I support it when I can.

What I don't consider serious, and roll on the floor laughing at, is the concept of you (you!) presenting to me text to use for "argumentation"...the thought brings tears of laughter to my eyes...

Anyway, Jason Solan, best to you and your efforts for the upcoming PA. Ty.
If there is something I can do to help, let me know.....

Thanks for the info Jay, I wasn't aware of that information. I'll try to contact LaVerne this week and see if he can check with the players he was referring to last year to see if they would follow the same restrictions.
Like Alex, vacation days are like important to me and would prefer to not have to use one if it will not bring new players.

Also thanks for the offer of help. As of right now it's just the planning stages.

Hi Jay ! Sorry for typo, I already corrected it. The reason of typo - I made two posts in close time responding to you and Joe Moore thats why I mistakenly typed his name twice.

I also misunderstood your laughing smile. Yes, if you like checkers and consider it seriously, then you don't need any helpers and can argue perfectly on your own and find all nececssary words to encourage Amish players to participate.

I am aware that gumbling, lottery etc is prohibited in Amish community but any problem can be resolved to everyone satisfaction. For instance - they can "donate" in default any future prices (minus entry fee) if they earn them and this could be just one compomise solution ... among other.

Respectfully,

Alex

So I am assuming no ACF membership will be required for the Amish people? Everybody who plays in tournaments gets included in the ratings, ACF or not, but at this point half the people in the ratings are not even ACF members. I am all for including them for a better turnout and more exciting tournament, but at this point ACF membership seems to be a joke lol.
