British Open 2012

Post by Hugh Devlin »

I note the British Open Championships 2012 started on Monday 7th at the “Travellers Rest”, Bristol. England.

Ten rounds (2 per day) of two games on 3 move openings. The “Masters” division has 14 entries, with half of these travelling over from Ireland. Some of these players are using this as a warm up for Lille in August. The “Intermediate” division has 13 entrants.

After the 1st day’s play the Irish contingent are putting down their mark in the “Masters” with S. Mc Cosker (NI), M. Hannigan (NI), and F. Moran (Irl) sharing the lead on 6 pts, followed by F. Mc Nally (NI) and P. Doyle (Irl) on 5 pts, and G. Miller (Eng) and D. Oliphant (Sct) on 4 pts.
(Mc Cosker is the only former winner taking part).

In the Intermediate division we have J. Jolliff (Eng) on max (8) points, followed by B. Poole (Eng) and G. Young (Sct) on 7 pts, and C. Boyle (Irl) on 6pts. Thereafter we have J. Caws (IOW) and Billy Kelly (Irl) on 5 pts, with others lower.

After day3 and rd 6.............Scores update from yest.WED/.. Shane on 18, Myles on 18 with Colin Young 3rd on 13 pts..........Mc Nally ,Oliphant,Doyle,Geo Millar back on 12........Todays scores later as they comes in.

Shane does have the edge having won 3-1 again Myles but prob re-pairing leaves it in the melting pot.Myles was runner-up last to Shane so its a good battle AND perhaps a warm-up for their upcoming match later in the year.!!!

Masters: After 6 Rounds: Mc Cosker 18pts, Hannigan 18pts, Young 13pts, Doyle 12pts, Oliphant 12pts, Mc Nally 12 pts, Miller 12pts.
I think it’s clear who will finish in the top two positions but in what order? They have both played against many of the other top challengers (except Miller) and I assume this is happening today.

It’s interesting to note that Shane has scored a win and draw in the first 6 rounds (3pts x 6) while Myles has had one drawn round (Oliphant), then he won both games against Phillips, Mc Nally, and Young, while losing (1-3) to Mc Cosker. Great scoring indeed. The British Open does not have repairing, so it’s now the biggest score on the run in to the finish.

Both of these players will be playing at Lille, France, in addition to Ireland’s Garrett Owens. It’s also worth noting that Shane played in the WQT 2007, 2009, and 2010 without loss of a single game, and was the only player to beat Borghetti at the WQT 2010. He’s a serious challenger for the Gold Medal, and Hannigan won’t be at the back of the class either!

Intermediate: After 6 Rounds: B. Poole 18pts, B. Kelly 17pts, J. Jolliff 17pts, C. Boyle 15pts, I. Caws 14pts, K. Lovell 13pts, J. Caws 13pts, C. Young 13pts.

He sure has a great chances for gold medal and all he needs - more wins, don't worry about draws or losses ! I am glad to hear that Shane, Myles and Garret will be playing in Lille. They are Irish but the are not green !

I wish good luck to everyone in Lille and best should win.

Just in from Shane from Bristol...............after 8rds of 10.

Shane on 25, Myles on 24...........Geo Millar and D.Oliphant on 18pts.

Tommorrow Shane plays G.Millar and Myles gets Tony Boyle.

Its all to play for, will we have a new champ or will Shane retain the title?

Masters: After 8 rounds - Mc Cosker 25pts, Hannigan 24pts, Miller 18pts, Oliphant 18pts, and Doyle 17pts. Today Mc Cosker scored 3-1 against Mc Nally while Hannigan was held to a draw (2-2) by Miller. That’s what made the difference here as both scored two wins in the afternoon session against Mc Kenna and Boyle respectfully. Miller and Oliphant remain tied on 18 points although Miller had scored 3-1 against Oliphant in 3rd round. Tomorrow morning see’s Mc Cosker Vs Miller, and Hannigan Vs Boyle, so there is a possibility of Hannigan getting an extra point. I’m informed that there will be re-pairing in the last round.

Of note is that George Miller is putting in a very strong performance after a long absence from the game producing a very creditable score. Danny Oliphant has also turned in a consistent score and will face his compatriot Bernard Coll tomorrow morn. Danny will also be heading to Lille and this event will stand him in good stead.

Intermediate: Poole 23pts, Jolliff 23pts, Boyle 22pts, Kelly 21pts. A very close finish here. Poole and Jolliff are level on points but Poole had earlier scored 3-1 in their head-to-head. Anyone’s tournament here.
