CONTEST #5

Post by Bill Salot »

There will be a delay in the appearance of Contest #5, perhaps until July.

I have many new problem entries to review before making a selection.

Keep them coming!

John,

That is fine with me, although I doubt that any of the competing composers will be there, maybe one.

Also the results are revealed at the end of the contest by simply going to the contest page.

Go ahead and mention it anyway.

This message is to let everyone know that Unofficial World Championship Checker Problem Composing Contest #5 has been activated today, July 1, on the Contest Page and will be accepting votes through July 29, just before the Nationals start. I'm hoping that John Acker will be the first to announce the names of the composers and will do it at the Nationals.

For some unknown reason, the Contest #5 diagrams did not show up on the cover page, but you will find them if you press the "Go to Contest" button on the cover page.

Although these contests are primarily to encourage composers to show their wares, I think solvers may find the four small, short, practical, but clever, original, unpublished problems to be of value in preparing for forthcoming crossboard encounters. I believe above average players (as all of you are) will be able to solve them from the diagram. But to be sure, please check the composers solutions against yours, and then vote for the one you deem best.

Your votes are the composers' rewards for a job well done.

You should add the link to the contest each time a new contest starts, maybe you could use it as your sign before your name....

The voting so far in Contest #5 is a little light, probably because of the summer heat, holiday, vacations and tournaments this month.

If you haven't reviewed the solutions to these four short, subtle, super sight solvers in this contest, you are missing some pretty, practical points. One of them is a game position. Can you guess which one?

If you have voted, how about commenting on whether we are headed in the right direction? With a growing backlog of original, unpublished problems from seven composers, we can be quite selective.
