Post by JR Smith »

Summer Quarterly 2012 - Millikin Alumni Magazine - "A Clash of Kings... This is not your Grandpa's Checkers."

A feature article in Dr. Richard Beckwith's "Millikin" Alumni Magazine. Article talks about today's championship checkers and Richard in the mix of it. The picture of Richard in front of the Cleveland Monument was taken by Alan Millhone during the WTM (Borghetti v Moiseyev) in August 2011, in Cleveland, OH.

Ach...........another great piece of writing from young Beckwith [Becky] i can see there is a secret writer behind the scientist/checker player. He has such a good way with words that somewhere down the line we can expect a block buster from his keyboard? Hopefully yes, but def a hidden talent.

What do you like about checkers?: I enjoy learning more and more as i go. despite its alleged simplicity the game is incredibly complex and rewarding.

Great article ..... Thanks for sharing JR.

Tommy while I have no doubts, and only praise for Richard's writing ability. The article was written by someone else, not Richard.

Hey John,

When reading articles in newspapers or magazines on subjects that I have some knowledge of, I've always found them to have a great deal of bologna in them. Seem the reporter always makes some quick notes goes back and writes what he or she thinks you said.

The guy was probable told that state tournaments usually have prize funds of $500 to $1,000 and he took that to mean that the winner receives that amount rather than $500 being divided up 15 ways.

I don't completely trust anything I read and probably only about half of what I write myself.

This article is a good profile of Dr. B, and a good overview of championship checkers!

Mr Acker, while i am always critical of journalistic mistakes .... in this case i rather he exagerates a little bit, than for him to say state checker tournaments are played for peanuts :)
I just read the article again and it looks a lot more polished in my desktop than in my phone, great job to all involved.
