Re: Home Internationals 2012
Sorry to correct you Alex. The South of Ireland is not a member of the UK. There was a time they were members of the UK by virtue of the English government of the different periods
continual refusal to give the Irish a say in running their own affairs. But in 1916 the Irish decided they were not going to be forever downtrodden by their coloniel masters and took up arms and ousted them. Maybe explains why the Great britain team fared so badly?

Re: Home Internationals 2012
Im afraid the UK/GB could hardly muster a team . i think only 5 players travelled and they were filled out with local players. But fair dues to Ian and Joan Caws great supporters of draughts this 50 yrs im sure came and played and represented GB/Scot/Wales combined. There were no Welsh or Scottish and thanks to players like John Jolliff and Brian Lucas who travelled . Local players John Preston [Dub],Andy Monteith,[Omagh]Mary Gallagher[Donegal] and W.R. Best[Tyrone] made up their numbers. They were let down by their own players really. In fact English and UK players are getting as scarce as "hens teeth". Ian Caws deserves great credit for keeping them together.
However it was the deciding drawn match game with Ire A V Ire B..........that undone the favourites and handed N.Ireland the title.Well done to all teams ...Germany??........well maybe we could accomodate them next time. What might be interesting is an All Ireland versus Italy match in the interum 4 years.Resulting in an All EUROPEAN team being chosen to take on the great Americans. Now thats food for thought and the way to go.

Re: Home Internationals 2012
Tommy, It is not surprising that there were not any Welsh players in Cookstown to participate in the internationals. Apart from John Morgan who fastidiously plays in tournaments throughout the UK and Ireland, only the late grandmaster, Bill Edwards ventured into all the UK corners to compete.
Sadly, the Welsh contingent of players of today insist that the home international tourney has to be played in Wales, usually Knighton before they will even consider mustering up a makeshift team to please the visiting teams. Possibly they only enjoy singing in the valleys?
On the other side of the coin, A once enthusiastic team of Scots always attended the Internationals in Morcambe. Morcambe was generally always seen to be a nice half-way meeting point by all competing teams. Over the years the Scots tired of then being asked of travelling the extra miles to play in a not too accessible Knighton. Knighton is a fascinating almost medieval town and the hosts always made one feel welcome. To be honest, I feel this match was a cobbled up affair. I attended the British in Bristol in May this year, where the genisis of this match in Cookstown seems to have originated at the English AGM. The Scottish players in attendance held their own meeting as to whether they would send a Scottish team, albeit not a full team. It was decided at the meeting that Scotland would not participate.

The Home Internationals was resurrected by Francie Mv N ally this year to try and keep it in vogue Bernard. True the EDA may have decided at the Brit Open to gather up a team but they were sorely let down by all accounts. In fact it was supposed to be a Cmbined ENG/SCOT/WALES team.
I can only foresee one solution and that is to see if the Italians can get a team to play versus an All Ireland team in the future. The Home Inters seem s on their last legs, if the truth be told.

Myles Hannigan was in charge of the Home Internationals a ran it with military precision despite some attempts at skullduggery and "DIRTY TRICKS" before a draught was pushed. The least said abt that the better , some people should hang their heads in "shame".But the boold TY director the afore mentioned Mr Hannigan parried with a few short sharp words and struck the insurgent down ,mortally wounded and "peace broke out never to be shattered again" and a good Ty was had by all.

Re: Home Internationals 2012
Many Americans think we can beat Europeans easy. I don't think so. Of course we should win, no doubts, but margin will be narrow. This will stimulate and wakeup patriotic American and ACF to do something to keep a leading position in checkers for many eayrs to come.tommyc wrote:What rumours and speculation is that??
Two-three Italian stars may help European team stay away of "one side" match, but overall average level of Eoropeans is still below ground zero

Anyone who disagree with this is highly wanted and welcome to organise and sponsor such match ! Without match rumors and speculations are growing

Hi Bernard,
No disrespect to John Morgan but I think that during the past forty-two years I have played in far more tournaments than that good gentleman. John is a very good friend of mine and he would be the first to agree to this fact. I have lost count of the tournaments I have played in over the years,
which include the Irish Open, Welsh Open, English Open, Scottish Open, British Open, Mississippi Open, Southern States Open, the International Match of 1983 at Petal, Mississippi, numerous Clacton and Essex Open tournaments, Sam Cohen tournaments, Tom Landry Plate tournaments and goodness knows how many others.
Even as a mediocre player I think that playing in such a vast number of tournaments counts!
All the best,
Lindus.
