2012 District 9 results (so far)

Post by Eric Strange »

After Day 1.

So far here are the results after 3 rounds

Eric Strange Vs Gerry Lopez 2-0-2 Strange
Eric Strange Vs Joe Schwartz 1-0-1 Strange
Joe Schwartz vs John Webster 1-0-3 Schwartz
John Webster vs Gerry Lopez (I did not stay for the last game, but it looked like John got a win on the last game and they drawed the first)

Eric Strange - 9
John Webster - 5 (probably)
Joe Schwartz - 5
Gerry Lopez - 3

Joe Schwartz had me beat in the first game and overlooked a move that gave me an easy draw. Here are the PDN's from our 2 games.

So me and Joe were talking through both of these games. When Joe found himself in a losing position he snapped at me and told me to be quiet. I responded with "SO ITS ONLY OKAY TO TALK, UNTIL YOU START LOSING!" I gave the him the GG and went out to smoke, when I came back he was gone.... Gonna be a fun 2 more games with him in the morning. Gerry gifted my first win vs him, moved the wrong checker and gave me a 2 for 1. Second win was legit, but he definitely missed some easy draws.

Just few questions / comments:

1) Can you scan menu in buffet "all you can eat" and post it here ?

2) Do organisers provide a free beer to players ?

3) Did you record your conversation with Joe during the game ?

4) One time, when I was in the middle of writing Sixth, I spent almost the whole week trying to prove soundness of 10-14, 23-18, 14x23, 26x19, 11-16, 19-15

From many Dr. Webster missings in this game I like this particular one (see diagram). Here he played 10-7 which is still wins, but he had a chance to finish it pretty.

Very nice shot!

looks like gerry lopez beat joe schwartz tonight, and joe beat me one and drawed one. Here are results so far

gerry vs john - 1-1-2 Draw
gerry vs joe - 1-0-3 Gerry
gerry vs Eric - 0-2-2 Eric

Eric vs Joe - 1-1-2 Draw
Eric vs John - 0-2-2 John

Joe vs John - 1-0-3 Joe

Points would go like this

John - 13
Eric - 12
Joe - 12
Gerry - 11

All of us will replay each other tomorrow. 1 opening, so 6 games total

Very close match and still anyones tournament

all 3 of these players are very good checkers players and I am surprised I have any points right now at all. GG's so far

Thanks guys, the funny thing is... The 1 day I actually got some sleep and wasn't completely hammered when I went to bed... was the day I lost all the games I had lost. The other days I only got 2-3 hours of sleep after drinking for 6+ hours. I didn't lose a single game on those days and actually played decently.

Not bad for a 1/0 online players eh. Guess that puts that argument to rest.

1. Eric, it`s allright to sleep before or after the game. As long as you don`t sleep during the game :D

2. Typically for a 1/0 online player that it takes so long to get a result that matches his talent.

Nakamura destroyed his chances of being the best chess player in the world with bullet games.

So much time wasted on the way ...

Eric played very well in this tourney. He is to be reckoned with in the future as I only see him getting better. It was my pleaure meeting him.
I wasn't in the tourney as I was returning from Los Angeles where my daughter had her first baby. I hope to play in this tourney next year.

Hard to take anything away from Eric regarding his result. In my opinion a much more impressive win than when I won the PA tournament 2 years ago. Despite less players he did not have a single easy round, every player was master caliber. In my case I had easy rounds which allowed me to stay close with Rich. In future tournaments where I have had to play in masters with much more master players, I have not done as well nor have I ever come close to winning. Obviously a national tournament will be more telling than this one for Eric, but his accomplishment in this tournament was at a high standard and proves he belongs with the big boys. It is also not unheard of to play great checkers with little sleep, I think Suki can watch TV all night before a day of checkers lol.

You can seriously doubt all you want. I am officially challenging you to a match. If your not man enough to accept it... that's on you.

From Chee:

I would like to issue a $250 challenge on top of Eric's challenge to John Acker on acf forum. If John wins the match I pay $250, if John loses he pays $150 to be split by half to Eric and me.

Ball is in your court John... What you gonna do?
