Proposed 2012 Western PA Checker Tournament

Post by neilwenberg »

I am proposing a one day, 5 round checker tournament for a Saturday in November, hopefully the 17th or 24. No entry fee or ACF membership requirement as the design will be to attract new players, whoever reads this should already be an ACF member in good standing. Would need 10 to 12 participants. Probably an 8 AM start with no break for lunch. There is a Subway resturant in conjuction with the gas station, so eat between your playing rounds. This will be at Eppingers Gas Station on US 19 about 4 or 5 miles north of Portersville, PA. Need input from any who might consider coming to this!

I will consider going to this one, but can't make any promises yet. I like the idea of a one day tournament and no ACF membership requirement as I think it would go good with trying to attract new players. My only question is, how are we planning to get new players to come out? How are we going to advertise for this tournament?

Trying to put up flyers in various business places, plan to contact Amish players in Eastern OH, hope to put on a checker exhibition at Slipperry Rock U, and word of mouth. Locate US Highway 19 in western PA, locate town of Porersville, go north on US 19 from Portersvile for about 3 or 4 miles and there will be a gas station with a Subway on your right. You cannot miss it. Remember this is still tentative. Also we will play 3 move restriction, 2 games per round for five rounds, approximately one and a half hours per round (so faster moving).

We will play in a large room on the side of the gas statoon which used to be a resturant. They have tables and chairs in the room which we can use. Will be hopeful of a good ourn out and all players from NC and anyplace else are welcome.

What will the admission fee be? Also, do you plan to keep a list of who would be coming Neil? I would like to know beforehand what the competition will be like before I make my final decision, it is a long way for me.

Close enough. 3 hours driving one way and $60 gas. Cigarets 1 pack, $4.25, 2 meals - $25.

Not a bad deal for weekend fun. I will think but don't count me. I may have another activity on November 17 and November 24 - "Thanksgiving weekend ... too much turkey for long drive :D

I think a 1 day tournament is a great idea Neil!
Unfortunately neither date works well for me, so I probably won't be able to attend. The 17th is definitely out for me and the weekend after Thanksgiving is always hectic for me so I doubt I'd be able to make it on the 24th either.

Keep us posted though and I hope it goes well for you.

We have finalized the 2012 Western PA Checker Tourney and it is set up as follows!

Proposed 2012 Western Pennsylvania Open Checker Tournament

I am proposing a one day, five round, checker tournament for Saturday, November 17, 2012. This will be held at the Eppinger Gas Station located 4 or 5 miles north of Portersville, PA on US Highway 19. If coming on US 422, go about two miles South on US 19. There is a large playing room available which was a former restaurant and it has tables and chairs for our use. ACF membership will not be required and there will be no entry fee.
Registration will be at 8:00 AM and play will start at 8:30 AM. Two game rounds will be one and a half hours in length and because there is a Subway restaurant in conjunction with the gas station, there will be no lunch break, so eat between or during your playing rounds.
I need input from any who might consider coming to this tournament. Motels available in New Castle, Butler, Grove City, and Slippery Rock, PA.

The address is: 1649 Perry Hwy (US 19) Portersville, PA 16051

you can google this address and see a picture.

you can also get there by using ACF calendar or NCCA calendar

https://maps.google.com/maps?hl=en&q=16 ... e=calendar

address is long, so you will have to cut and paste full URL into your browser to get it.

I am very satisfied with the conversations so far relating to this tourney. We will hold it even if I happen to be the only person in attendance, so even those who have not yet responded but plan to attend can rest assured that the tourney will go on on the date and at the place listed above.
