Welcome to Problem Contest #8

Post by Bill Salot »

For the first time, the Unofficial World Championship Checker Problem Composing Contest is partially animated! Specifically, the Trunk lines are animated and the pertinent variations pop up in printed form during the animation (a Jason Solan innovation).

By using the animation, You may be able to enjoy and evaluate the original, unpublished, tricky problems in Contest #8 without ever setting them up on the board! If you question a Trunk move, just check the adjacent printout of a perhaps critical variation. You may be surprised.

Before you log off of the contest page, be sure to vote for the problem you deem best. The composers hope for an uptick in the number of votes cast. It is their reward for a lot of effort.

Please comment here on how the new arrangement works for you and how we might make it better.

Thanks,

The animations are very good! For Boomerang's last note it is 11-15, not 22-18.
Boomerang indeed!

JR and Ingo,

I am very embarrassed about my amateurish color reversal of those two moves. But thank you for pointing them out.

I corrected the solutions page, but I'll have to ask animator Jason to correct the animations page, since I don't know how. He innocently copied my errors.

Ingo,
Did your computer issues with the animation prevent you from voting? I hope not.

As I write this, there have been 76 visits to this thread. But I think very few of those visitors have gone to the problem page, at the link below, and enjoyed the four animated solutions. If they had, I don't see how they could have resisted voting for one of the masterpieces on display there.

It is possible that some have clicked all of the "View Animation" buttons, but have not clicked all of the "Show Solution" buttons. If they then tried to vote, they would get a message saying, "You have not viewed all solutions. Please consider all solutions before voting."

Unless Jason Solan has changed the program, the "View Animation" button does not trigger the program to "know" that the solution has been looked at. And if all solutions have not been looked at, the program will not let them vote.

I hope we have not lost any votes as a result. The glitch will be corrected in due time, but please don't wait. Time is short.
