Time to get out the midnight oil
Happy hunting.
I will show the answers on here early in the new year.
CHRISTMAS QUIZ 2012
1.Who was the next British born player to win the American Championship after Hugh Henderson ?
2. Following in the footsteps of Claxton and Levy, who is the youngest player to win the British Open Championship, so far, in this century ?
3. Which checker book has the trunk games neatly arranged in columns, yet the move order reads across the page ?
4. Puzzle Problem by O. H. Richmond.
A man named Thomas Jinks, with one named William West,
Had a little game of draughts one day, to see which was the best.
Jinks got a man ahead, when the game was nearly done.
But West would not give up, for he had two kings to one.
West moved his man to ten, and made a great mistake.
For if he could not move from twelve, he could from twenty-eight.
And force the man from twenty-four by going twenty-seven,
In case Jinks moved his single man from sixteen to eleven.
Now checker friends, West lost the game, and the problem can be seen,
When I tell you that a king stood clear way over on thirteen.
5. The picture of which well known Problem composer, at the age of 15, appeared in Ryan’s American Checkerist, with the following cover problem ?
B; 6, 24, Kings 3, 11.
W: 22, 28, Kings 17, 19.
Terms: White to play and win.
6. Which opening was named the “Virginia” in the New England Checker Player 1876 ?
7. When Stewart played Banks in 1922, which player was the Challenger ?
8. Who invented the title “ World Champion Emeritus” ?
9. In a national TV broadcast, who described the EDA as an association of Retired Elderly Gentlemen ?
(Oh how I love to be in that number L. S.)
10. In which Draughts magazine does the editor refer to “The poor sap !” in describing the efforts of a “dub” (average player) against a Master player ?

My solution will appear in the next issue of LCN. Order your copy now, from John.

Re: Christmas Quiz 2012
Hi Liam, Christmas Quiz 2012 was most interesting and challenging!
1. Oldbury, I got right.
2. McCosker, was another correct answer.
3. I failed to find the answer! I should have got it because I recently purchased Sixth from the ACF Store, but I'm saving it for "advanced" study! Still, I did thumb through it enough to (should) have noticed!
4. This is very interesting, how does one order the LCN from the USA?
5. I was sure it was Milton Loew! But I always go through Slocum Strokes by Bill Salot for the Christmas Quiz!
6. I did get the Virginian right from Vocabulary Of Checkers.
7. I had Stewart challenging Banks, do I get partial credit?
8. No guess, but of course the title applies to Tinsley!
9. No guess, but that is an interesting connexion to Tinsley v Chinook!
10. No guess, but it shows DEO's sense of humor!
Happy New Year! --George Hay
