WCDF Ratings vs. ACF Ratings

Post by Michael Holmes »

While the WCDF has still not updated their rating in years the ACF has fixed their rating updates to a regular basis now. I think it is time for the ACF to give titles too. Waiting a couple of years for a title to be posted or given certainly is not a healthy promotion of support for those who participate. I must add that certain tournaments (TN for one) should be considered toward the GM titles as other national tournaments have similar strength players in them. However, the WCDF does not have to change for the ACF to change. We want titles from the ACF. Players and officers please comment!

Michael, if you will be elected as ACF Player Representative in the upcoming 2013 elections (I really hope so), it will be in your hands. Do it !

I have somewhere on my computer list of ALL ACF players starting 1905 which must be considered as Masters or Grandmasters. Richard Fortman sent this list to me somewhere in 2003-2004. ACF can give them Registration # and then extend this list by adding life players.

I still have at home my Master Id from Soviet Union which I received in 1975 and brought with me to United States. It has my picture (15 years old!), Registration Number, stamp of Sport Minister Department and signature of government clerk.

I am wondering if we can do anything like this, maybe on low profile, in ACF ?

So ... ball is in your hands, Michael !

Yes, Master Division in TN defineley must be considered as "GM norm event". I think today we should seriously consider players like you, Larry Keen, John Webster, Hugh Burton (past accomplishments), Leo Levitt (past accomplishments), Paul Davis (past accomplishments) as potential candidates for ACF GM title.

Personally I don't worry much about WCDF ratings, if we have ACF ratings setup and running properly ... which is already done - many thanks to Joe and Eric !

Yes, I think the ACF should have the capacity to give players a master status based on their accomplishments in ACF tournaments.

I am very happy with how the ratings are turning out. Now that "most" players are at their established ELO ratings, everyone is very very close to each other in rank. This means that every single tournament someone is in could move them way up or way down on the ladder. Very exciting!

So how can ACF make this happen without it being a long and drawn out thing?

I been told that "Holliday" hero is Robert Stewart [ the best way to hold a title is never to defend it].

I can get things started and hold a meeting in March with top players. If someone else is voted in afterwards I can forward any progress that has been made. While change is necessary to keep moving forward we would want a complete analysis, explanation, and action for any secenario we can think of at that time. Yes, improvements will be welcomed.

Just to mention, we already implemented to knew rating brackets for the different divisions. These were used to an extent at last years nationals.

2000 and above- Master
1700-1999- Major
1699 and lower- Minor

How these ratings will help decide a grandmaster status has not been decided yet.
