I am sorry I was unable to make it this year, shame on poor Alex  AL is in heart of America and also - in my heart!

I am glad to see that without undisputed leader there is a very tough competition with tie and close points for many players.

After 4 rounds in Master Division seven (!!!) players out of 11 have 10 and/or 9 points and 3 more players have 8 points ... WOW ! Mister Bye works very hard and can determine a winner at the very last moment

Good luck to everyone and best should win !

Regards,

Alex

Last round of Master

Keen(15)and Gober repair(14)
Kelley(14) and Stanley(13)

Keen won game and draw
Kelley won game and draw

Keen 18
Kelley 17
Gober 15
Stanley 14

may have been others that moved up with 15 but Keen and Kelley 1&2 and I may get 3rd on honor points having played Keen twice.

Mike Choate won Majors, Larry Pollard won Alabama title, Keen won Dist. title

dont know about minors but I think either Wilma or Gayle won that division

Had this position with the red side against Larry Pollard in first game of our round. I was expecting to score a win but Larry gained a shocking draw !!!
I think it's a cute idea he saw crossboard.....

It sure is, Larry is tuff sometimes !

District 4, Rd4, G1
A. Moiseyev vs L. Pollard

White to move and draw.

My last move was trade 8-11. Position on diagram looks unevenful but in fact - it is already critical for white and the only drawn move is 26-23*. In game Larry played 29-25? and lost as following:

11-15, 32-27, 6-9, 20-16, 2-7, 27-23, 9-13, 25-21, 14-17, 21x14, 7-11, 16x7, 3x17, 23x16, 12x19 Red Wins

Congratulations to all winners and new title holders.

When Larry Pollard pulled the nice shot escape on me(see above fen), I wanted to stand and cheer. After our round he showed me a shot he used on Ryan Pronk to escape a sure defeat. Here is the position with terms of White to move and Draw.

Pollard

If anyone knows of either shot being published please let me know where you saw
them.

In this tournament, I had the privilege of playing Larry Keen twice. I am thrilled to have been at the top table in the last round (gave me a chance to win it all). That was not to be this time, however in our round 3 meeting, I lost the first side of the ballot, but on the second side was able to score my first ever win against this Master (boy am I thrilled) Here is how it went.

[Event "Alabama Open, Dist. 5"]
[Date "Nov 2010"]
[Black "Wayne Gober"]
[White "Larry Keen"]

1. 10-14 24-19 2. 7-10 22-18 3. 11-16 26-22 4. 8-11 22-17 5. 10-15 19x10 6. 6x22 25x18 7. 2-6 17x10 8. 6x22 28-24 9. 3-7 30-25 10. 22-26 31x22 11. 16-20 22-18 12. 1-6 *

Now Larry looked for quite some time and my hopes grew that he just might make the desired move !
white moved 21-17 creating the diagrammed position. The old Okie scored a lucky win.

Thanks for sharing... I watched your 4th Round Game2 with Frank Davis which you almost had a win on Davis at least an advantage but Davis finally scrambled out and got a draw, but you showed us a win ending which Frank could have easly over looked and lost. He even admitted he didn't see this possibility and moved into it on replay, but said hopefully he wouldn't have stepped into it if you chose to set it up in actual play. That would be an excellent position to illustrate if you can set it up or even the 1st game.

Hi J.R.,

Here are both games. Game 1 is a comedy of errors and has earned worst game of tournament for my games lol !!

Game 1
[Black "Frank Davis"]
[White "Wayne Gober"]

1. 10-14 24-20 2. 7-10 22-18 3. 3-7 25-22 4. 9-13 18x9 5. 5x14 28-24 6. 11-15 23-19 7. 7-11 26-23 8. 15-18 22x15 9. 11x18 32-28 10. 8-11 29-25 11. 11-15 30-26 12. 13-17 20-16 13. 6-9 16-11 14. 17-22 26x17 15. 9-13 24-20 16. 13x29 21-17 17. 15x24 28x19 18. 14x21 23x7 19. 29-25 7-3 20. 25-22 3-7 21. 1-6 7-3 22. 21-25 11-8 23. 4x11 3-8 24. 6-10 8x6 25. 2x9 20-16 26. 25-30 16-11 27. 30-26 Black Wins

Game 2

My game record is messed up on this game and couldn't quickly reconstruct but this is the landing in game 2 with Frank. Frank had asked for a draw twice before during this game but I had a chance with a king majority. I had been pressing the position for several moves when we arrived at the following position. For several moves, I had meant to make the proper attacking move next and can not explain why I went 22-17 which has no merit. The proper move was shown after the game and Frank said he would have moved 13-9 in reply. I was sick that I didn't properly play the ending though it really all draws.
