Moving the PA tourney further east was anexcellent idea! Jason is to be commended for this. Hope Jay H. can round up some more enthusiasts from eastern PA and rest of District!

I really dont like Friday tournaments. I think it is another way that makes it hard to get the younger group involved. If I wasn't a dad I may not be so vocal about it.

I agree with Michael. I think having a tournament starting on Friday will ultimately hurt attendance. You pretty much are asking people to take a day or two off from work. Could draw in a few Amish players, but what about everyone else? I think it obviously diminishes the chances of getting any new non-Amish players, which is the majority.
I am a little upset the mid-Ohio is scheduled on the same weekend. Another option would be to push the tournament back a little later. Looks like there is availability the weekend starting the 31 of Aug, which is a Saturday. That is also Labor day weekend. Just some things you may want to think about.

Crist Miller continued to use the approximate dates use by Antique Steam Power & Engine Show, Mt. Hope Ohio. But when checkers took a back seat at the Antique Show, Crist and other organizers figured they would have their own checker meet in a manufacturing building and they elected to use the 3rd weekend of August. (Friday & Saturday)I am a little upset the mid-Ohio is scheduled on the same weekend.

Re: Pennsylvania State Open Checker Tournament 2013
Jay H asked 2 years ago for us. They said maybe 1 or 2, but most likely nobody would because of having an entry fee (like a form of gambling).JohnAcker wrote:Would it be possible to call the Amish players in Lancaster to see if they'd be playing in the first place? I'm all for reaching out to players, but at some point we've got to play the numbers.
However every year I the question comes up and I hear through the grapevine that Amish are interested but won't play because of the Sunday games.
When asked on here, it was pretty much 50/50 on friday start vs saturday start, so I figured we'd give it a shot this year and see what happens.
I have no interest in moving the dates. If you guys can find a better time, by all means go ahead. I'll give you my contacts and help in anyway I can, but I'm not going to organize it.
Normally this is a June event, but I messed up and missed the deadline to have the event published in the April bulletin. I checked and saw nothing scheduled yet for the weekend of August 17th, which worked well for this area, so I went ahead and booked the hotel. At this point I'd rather skip this year and setup for June next year rather than move the dates.

It's cancelled unless Jason can follow up on another possible hotel option; otherwise, we might consider throwing in with Mid-Ohio.I am confuse with all these posts ... Dates are August 16-17 (Fri-Sat) and venue in Carlisle ... correct ? Announcement on NC site is up to day ? Alex
I talked to Crist Miller and he said it would be fine to combine the two and he actually want more players to attend his meet.
They have a 3-Move, 7 round format (Friday & Saturday) The $20 entry fee covers tournament expense snacks & dirnks Friday, breakfast and lunch Saturday. Left over is given to charity. A Laser printed wooden wall clock printed with winner's name/tourney Info to top place winner.
You can read their Mid-Oho Announcement.

You guys surprise me every time I try to think about this
Should we say that PA State Tourney 2013 cancelled first time in history ? And instead,
we absorb players into Mid-OH event, which is technically just another event ?
We have to name things properly. Tell me if my assumption is inaccurate.

Re: Pennsylvania State Open Checker Tournament 2013
This was my understanding. The actual venue is moving from the original announcement, but all other things I believed to be correct. However, I've not put any money down yet so if the players' preference is to cancel the PA this year, I'm ok with that. My good friends bachelor party is the same weekend, so I would gladly put my money into several local watering holes instead of paying for a venue to hold a checkers event.Alex_Moiseyev wrote:I am confuse with all these posts ... I'm heading to the new venue on Wednesday (first available day) to double check the room size. The manager assures me it should work based on our prior setups, but tells me it's an odd shape and wants me to check it out for myself beforehand.
I'm not putting the event on for myself, so if the general consensus is that players would rather play in Mid-Ohio than PA, thats fine. No hurt feelings and we'll switch back to a June date to make a great PA event next year. I'm looking for input from players who either plan on attending or would've attending had the dates been different. I would just like that input before Wednesday evening so I can let the manager know and we can start spreading the word to checker players.

Re: Pennsylvania State Open Checker Tournament 2013
I am not interested in any shape or form in combining the PA District 3 Open with the Mid Ohio Meet. These are two separate tournaments in two separate states and should be treated as such. If people want to choose the Mid-Ohio Meet over PA that is fine, but IMO these should be two separate tournaments. So while I appreciate the offer, I myself am not interested in this option.
Jason, if you are not satisfied with the venue on Wednesday, I will gladly step up and try to set up the District 3 tournament. I have already checked out some other hotels online for backup. Location and time of the tournament just might be different, but I can still try to accommodate your preferences as I know you have gone through great lengths and sacrifices to try and make this tournament happen.

Re: Pennsylvania State Open Checker Tournament 2013
Thats what I meant, sorry if it wasn't clear. Since OH is not in the same district as PA, there would be no way to crown a PA State Champion at that event to my knowledge. I assumed the word "combining" referred to players and promotion, not titles.JohnAcker wrote:Yeah, I don't think we should combine the tournaments for things like state titles. I'm just saying that if the August dates don't work out for Pennsylvania and folks want to play a tournament that weekend, the Mid-Ohio is an option.
Thanks for the comments Joe. I'll keep the information flowing as I get it.
