We have a new World champion!

GM Michele Borghetti (Italy) today won the 37th game of his match against the title holder Alex Moiseyev (USA) in his home town, Livorno (Italy), to take the title by 6 wins to 3 and 29 draws. Alex loses the title after 10 years of winning against the strongest oponents he could get. In 2011 he defeated his rival on home ground in the USA by 7 to 6 and 29 draws.

The WCDF congratulates the new World Champion for winning the title and Alex Moiseyev for holding it for 10 amazing years.

Interesting that in the final game Alex, rightly tried for a win he had earlier scored against Dr Beckwith:

10-15 22-17; 9-13 26-22!?; 6-10 30-26; 1-6 Now White probably hasn't got anything better than 17-14 into 9-13 23-18; 10-15 as a I showed earlier on the forum.

However, this would not offer White any winning chances at all, so Alex rightly mixed it up further with 23-18.

Objection, Mylord. It shows that Miki is studying hard, as he obvously read your ACF Forum contribution on that and was prepared.

He also played a secret test match against Sergio Scarpetta (he can barely have a better sparring partner), and it seems that Sergio (and Mac Banks) coached Miki quite well. Miki still could take 6 games from Alex, but he won`t lose 7 games in a match anymore.


I am looking forward to the match book and the next Qualifier in Barbados (GAYP) and in 2014 (3-move).

Congrats to Miki on a fine win, and the new World Champion. Miki was clearly the better player in this match and came much more prepared than last time. Miki only lost 3 games, one was on time control and another on a tough skullcracker ending that required perfect pp knowledge. There was only one game I felt he was truly outplayed and lost. Granted, Alex did miss some opportunities, though Miki never made it easy. Alex is still a great player, but will need to find a way to improve if he is going to win back the title. Right now though, it looks like we will be heading into the Miki and Sergio era of checkers.

Congratulations to the new 7th 3-moves World Champion Michele Borghetti from Italy and many thanks to organisers of match and all sponsors and contributors. The bad news is that I lost this match and didnt accomplish promises to my supporters. The good news are that we have new and very good Champion which is good for checkers. Another good news is - I can take some rest now and spend more time with my family.

I am considering previous 3-moves World Champion Ron King as "20th century" champion. It looks more liklely that my championcy period 2002-2013 was kind of "transition period" and now we have 21st century World Champion - another great news for checkers. The modern tendency in chess and other forms of checkers is - every new World Champion is more "universal" player than previous World Champion. We dont have anymore "tactical only" or "strategical only" players. Miki played this match better than me and demonstrated better skills in all phases. And of course, next Champion who will beat Mikik should do this even better and being more universal than Miki ! And this is certainly another great news for checkers.

Game is alive and doing well. I feel comfortable that title now goes to right hands and has a bright future.

And when you do, please avoid repeating the one overriding critical error that you made, resulting in your defeat at Livorno.

My urgent advice is do not, I repeat, DO NOT ever agree again to play serious checkers on brown squares.

Alex, I would not call your 10 years or so just a "transition period," but rather a dynasty. Just like when a team in any sport wins many championships in a short amount of time, most of the time consecutive championships, they become a dynasty. Has there ever been a world champion in checkers to reign as champion that many years in a row besides Tinsley? I would say what you have done is an amazing accomplishment. As of now, you are still the "21st Century" champion. Miki may be the current champion and best player, but he has a long way to go to equal your overall success.

The "...........SEVENTH" or number 7 now theres a coincidence while watching the Wimbeldon Tennis Singles Final today which was won by Andy Murray[Sco] the number 7 came up again ;;;; todays date was the 7/7 and it Murrays "seventh" Final and no Brit had won it for 77 years!!! HOWZAAT and now we have the Seventh World Champ in Miki............

Its been a good week for Europe the Lions won test against Australia first time since 97.France won the Ladies Title in Tennis and all the 4 finalists ladies and men were Europeans...................!!!
