2nd Int. USA - Barbados Match (GAYP)

Post by rich beckwith »

Round 1 in progress (some matches have second game in progress). Probably only one round today, as hotel has bookings in both rooms later. USA player name listed first.

1 Jim-Morrison- Ron "Suki" King 3
4 Rich Beckwith- Desmond Foster 0
3 Joe Schwartz- G. Scott 1
1 Mark Sokolovsky- V. Cumberbatch 1
3 C. Freeman- Desmond Maughan 1
0 Luba Turiy- Dwayne Harris 2
4 Alex Holmes- Kent Layne 0

I guess Jim Morrison jinxed himself by telling everyone he had not lost a game all year. Suki won with 27-20 Second Double Corner!

What do you like about checkers?: It has to deal with a lot of strategy

I got real lucky with Kent in the first round, I'm still not doing to well but I did finally win four games in a row so I'm getting some confidence now. I hope I do not have to face Suki next he's to good for me.

I believe King also beat Morrison on 27-20 second double corner in the GAYP nationals 2 years ago, in 2011. The only GAYP game I believe Morrison lost in the last two nationals. I suppose every great player has a weakness!

What do you like about checkers?: I like complicated games and draw endgames with one man down

It's an interesting match. USA team looks favoured.

I saw the game: Jim vs Ron. I think Jim hasn't learned that variation yet. Anyway, I admit Ron can manage the white side very well.

Round 3

3 C. Freeman- Colin Price 1

Team totals for each round:
USA 16+11+11=38
Barb. 12+17+17=46

I don't think there will be many more games due to scheduling problems.
No room was available in hotel last night. We had to do second WQT award ceremony tonight because no one gave the media advanced notice to do full awards Friday night. Tomorrow the Barbados players return to work and insisted on a 7:00 pm start, but many Americans have an early Tuesday flight, so we may only see a limited round tomorrow to finish.
