2014 US National

Post by Michael Holmes »

Several people have talked to me about the US National only being 4 days long instead of 5. Could I get people's feedback on this?

6 days from Monday to Saturday is fine for Masters. 4 games (1 round) on Monday and Saturday, and 6 games (1.5 rounds) from Tuesday thru Friday - assuming 8 rounds, 4 games per round.

This is regarding 3 moves Nationals Master Division.

I agree with Alex's proposal for masters. For minors and majors I think it would be better to shorten it to 4 days.

Some master players have suggested that the National could be played in 4 days. I think a happy medium here would be five days for the Masters. This does not mean we have to shorten the length of rounds though. The bid I put in for the National is to have it Monday through Friday (extending it to Saturday is an option) immediately following the Southern States Tournament so that someone could participate in both. Next year is not an option to submit to have the WQT next to the Nationals but if we could shorten the US National to 4 or 5 days for sure next year (take a vote) then the following year (2015) we could have the Southern, US National, and then hopefully the WQT all next to each other.

Some readers have already noticed that I put all the WQT games on the forum. I have also put the USA vs. Barbados 2013 games on the forum too in the "Games" category below.

I am interesting details regarding Lebanon bid - what is hotel and playing room size ? What prices hotel offered ?

Any pictures of hotel and playing room also would be helpful ?

BTW. Who submitted a bid ? I am not asking about how much money (not donations or ACF portion) organizers putted here, but I am assuming that BY-LAWS minimum requirement, $1,500, is committed.

The TN bid (started July 14) I put in is next to the Southern States Tournament with Frank and Mary being the referee.

The J. Chappell bid for Louisville KY is for July 23rd thru July 27th and Leon Creek has agreed to be the referee. I saw this morning that the Louisville, KY bid was selected. It has $750.00 pledged. More details will be posted in a couple of weeks.

Several players, including you Alex M., have given input about the longevity of the national. Your desires and wants were considered.

I appreciate your concern. It appears that you are assuming or insinuating that we have not asked players. Once we have the Nationals we can again review with more checker players upcoming options for tournaments.

The plan right now is to have the National for the Masters for five days with the 1st thru the 4th day having 1 ½ rounds and the last day only being 1 round. This is a total of seven rounds. This will also allow for those who wish to leave on that last day perhaps more time to travel in light, etc.

I think shortening the Nationals is a good way to encourage more attendance. Will the time controls for masters be the same as before, 30 moves per hour?

Time controls at this time are planned to be the same. The change is the day and number of rounds. I can provide more details in probably just a couple of weeks.

I also noted that the Majors may be only 4 days.

Michael, you just made me a day !

I can't remember if anyone asked me about changing 8 rounds by 7. It was a question about 5 or 6 days. This is a big difference and could mislead people.

I plan to ask people again during National - who was questioned, what exactly was wording of question and what was an answer. In addition: before voting people should be inform that this is official voting. I was never "officially" asked by ACF - conversation in forum is social and shall not be counted.

In the past, follow historical tradition, when we wanted to change anything in format / terms / conditions of National, we asked people in playing room and this was in affect of NEXT National. ACF simply doesn't have any rights and obligations to break this tradition. Once we didn't vote for 5 days & 7 round in the past - it simply cannot be accepted in 2014 event.

Respectfully,

I understood your request from the first post:

You thoughts and opinion are always welcome.
The tournament is scheduled for five days.
