1.9-14, the "Double Corner" is the move 2nd in popularity after 1. 11-15. Both players used it in their first games.

During the game 10.1-6 drew the attention of the online spectators, but Ron choose another path that lead to simplifications and a clear draw. 10.1-6 31-27 looks mighty complicated.

This game is similar to Case v Rubin 1930 US Jr. Ch.
1-6 was played in the Gonotsky v Lieber 1928 match.

In the 4th game Sergio opened 11-15 for variety :D and Ron responded 24-20. Later Ron made a losing move 25-22? at opening stage but Sergio missed a win by playing 3-8? instead 4-8*. First day finished with 4 draws and one missing win by challenger.

S. Scarpetta vs R. King, G4

Red to move and win

4-8* RW, 3-8 (as played in the game) drawn

4th game Drawn, Scarpetta missing win

[Event "WTM Gayp 2014 - Day 1 - Game 4"]
[Date "2014-07-05"]
[Black "Sergio Scarpetta"]
[White "Ronald King"]
[Result "1/2-1/2"]
1. 11-15 24-20 2. 8-11 28-24 3. 9-14 22-17 4. 6-9 17-13 5. 1-6 25-22 (A) 6. 14-18 23x14 7. 9x25 29x22 8. 3-8 (B) 22-17 9. 15-19 24x15 10. 10x19 26-23 11. 19x26 30x23 12. 11-16 20x11 13. 8x15 27-24 14. 7-10 23-19 15. 15-18 17-14 16. 10x17 21x14 17. 2-7 19-15 18. 18-22 31-27 19. 22-26 (C) 1/2-1/2

Note:
(A) 5. ... 25-22? is a loss according to theory.
(B) This lets the win slip away. 8. 4-8 is published as a win for red, Reynolds- Morrall, 1st IM 1905.
(C) Now the petite combinaison 19. ... 15-11, 20. 7x16 14-9!, 21. 5x14 24-19, 22.16x23 27x2 simplifies into an easily drawn ending.

Ron King was thus lucky to survive the first day.

Score: King 0, Scarpetta 0, Drawn 4

Looks like a repeat of last year where Sergio is the one with the chances to win. Once again, King seems most vulnerable in the early stages of the game. Not sure why Sergio chose 3-8 as opposed to the more natural 4-8. This is shaping up to being another great match.

Did anyone notice the marked resemblance of the ending of Game 4 to the ending from Game 1 - Lowder v Oldbury, in their 1979 World title match ?

[Event "WTM Gayp 2014 - Day 2 - Game 6"]
[Date "2014-07-06"]
[Black "Sergio Scarpetta"]
[White "Ronald King"]
[Result "1/2-1/2"]
1. 11-15 24-20 2. 8-11 28-24 3. 9-14 22-17 4. 6-9 17-13 5. 1-6 23-19 6. 15-18 26-23 7. 14-17 21x14 8. 10x17 23x14 9. 9x18 25-22 ? (A) 10. 18x25 30x14 11. 6-10 14-9 12. 5x14 29-25 (B) 13. 14-17 13-9 14. 17-21!? (C) 32-28 ! (D) 15. 21x30 19-16 16. 12x19 24x6 17. 30-25 6-1 18. 7-10 31-26 19. 4-8 27-24 20. 10-14 1-6 21. 8-12 26-23 22. 25-21!? (E) 23-19 23. 3-8 6-1 24. 21-17 1-6 25. 17-21 6-1 26. 21-25 1-6 27. 25-21 6-1 28. 21-17 1-6 29. 17-21 6-1 1/2-1/2

Did Sergio miss another win?

(A) regarded as bad. Theory prefers 9. ... 25-21
(B) Now the natural 12. ... 13-9 loses to 13.11-16.
(C) Here 14. 10-14 avoids the shot and 14. ... 9-5, 15. 17-21 25-22, 16. 21-25 finally lost in Owen-Gabbard, Lakeside 1981. Unless Ron has something at his sleeve to improve that game, it seems that Sergio missed another publish play win.
(D) This shot simplifies and relieves the tesion for white.
(E) Here 22. 12-16 offers another chance, as now 22. ... 24-19 runs into 23.14-18!, but 23 . ... 23x14, 24. 16x23 6-10 might draw with care.

Score: King 0, Scarpetta 0, Drawn 6

Then what happens after 13. 14-17 13-9, 14. 10-14! instead of 14. 17-21 !? which simply allows a shot to relieve the pressure?
