It seems that Scarpetta's blunder was a draw in Italien dama. Here the notation is English checkers:

[FEN "W:W27,26,25,24,14:B15,12,7,6,5."]
1. 25-21 6-9 2. 26-23 9x18 3. 23x14 7-11 4. 27-23 15-18 5. 23-19 18-23 6. 14-10 23-27 7. 10-7 27-31 8. 24-20 31-27 9. 7-3 27-24 10. 20-16

And (in dama) the king (instead of the piece) must capture, draw.

That's funny and not so funny and quite possible. Comedy and tragedy come together. Only Sergio can help us with answer. All I can confirm - he was slightly short of time when he made this blunder.

The diagrammed position above was reached in a game R. Jordan v R. McSwain, given as a draw.

Game 16: Ron King wins and equalize score: 1-1

[Event "WTM Gayp 2014 - Day 4 - Game 16"]
[Date "2014-07-08"]
[Black "Ronald King"]
[White "Sergio Scarpetta"]
[Result "1-0"]
1. 11-15 22-18 2. 15x22 25x18 3. 12-16 18-14 (A) 4. 9x18 23x14 5. 10x17 21x14 6. 6-9 26-23 7. 9x18 23x14 8. 1-6 29-25 9. 6-9 24-19 10. 16x23 27x18 11. 8-11 32-27 12. 3-8 30-26 13. 11-15 18x11 14. 8x15 26-23 15. 9x18 23x14 16. 2-6 28-24 17. 4-8 31-26 18. 8-12 25-21? (B) 19. 6-9 26-23 20. 9x18 23x14 21. 7-11 27-23 22. 15-18 23-19 23. 18-23 14-10 24. 23-27 10-7 25. 27-32 24-20 26. 32-27 7-3 27. 27-24 1-0

(A): A line that has the reputation to be a safe draw for white, but that verdict is doubtful, as Red clearly has the initiative in the endgame. One Single careless move can be costly in this line.

(B): And here is the mistake.

Score: King 1, Scarpetta1, Drawn 14, 8 games to go.

Amazing ! The same story happened 2 years ago, when Sergio missed a win, I posted it here and next day he used my analyses with success. It is hard to believe, but Ron played this grave line again! This time Sergio played it correctly with temporarily pitch 24-27 but missed a technical win late. There were several turning points in this game when scientific result changed. I demonstrate you here the last turning point.

S. Scarpetta vs R. King, WTM 2014, G. 17
Image
Red to move and win.

Here is a winning path: 14-18*, 5-9, 18-23, 2-6 (9-13, 15-10 RW), 15-18* and now white can't advance man on 21. Red crows last King and wins.

Instead 14-18*, Sergio played 15-10? and game continued: 40. ... 5-9 41. 22-18 9-13 42. 26-23 13-9 43. 23-19 29-25 44. 19-24 1/2-1/2

That's a good question Liam. I personally think it is ok. Instead of researching in books and with program between matches, you can also use this forum. The only thing is, it seems that Sergio definitely uses this as a resource while Ron probably doesn't. Maybe someone should tell Ron to feel free to check out the after game analysis in the game section :)

Game 18:

[Event "WTM Gayp 2014 - Day 5 - Game 18"]
[Date "2014-07-09"]
[Black "Ronald King"]
[White "Sergio Scarpetta"]
[Result "1/2-1/2"]
1. 11-15 24-20 2. 8-11 28-24 3. 4-8 23-18 (A) 4. 12-16 26-23 5. 15-19 24x15 6. 10x26 30x23 7. 7-10 22-17 8. 9-14 18x9 9. 6x22 25x18 10. 10-15 18-14 11. 8-12 32-28 12. 3-7 29-25 13. 16-19 23x16 14. 12x19 25-22 15. 1-6 31-26 16. 6-9 14-10 17. 7x14 27-23 18. 11-16 20x11 19. 14-18 23x16 20. 18x25 28-24 21. 25-30 26-23 22. 2-6 23-19 23. 6-10 16-12 24. 30-26 19-16 1/2-1/2t

(A): an ususal sideline. Not very strong it seems, but good enough for Sergio Scarpetta to draw.

Yes, but not while a game is in progress! Checkers does not need a "Toiletgate" incident,
such as the infamous Kramnik vs Topalov Chess WCM of 2006. :)

Of course the rules do not allow a player to analyze with another player or any electronic device or to read during the game, but that did not happen.

For spectators it is allowed, as long as they do not communicate with the players.
