Also, in order to be efficient, the tournament pairing forms would have to be universal. I'm not sure how close that is, but if there are some who do things completely different, that could be a problem.

It seems the person would want to improve on understanding reality first. "Oh, I did well in a game with someone who I usually struggle with" => [I must be getting better].
