Most recent GAYP comments

Post by Roberto L Ernest »

The most recent posted reply to my comments states that very few ACF members are interested in GAYP, that GAYP players are a very small minority. That is exactly my point.

The three-move players are all inside the organization and the GAYP players, a great many of whom (but not all) are little more than novices, are mostly on the outside. There is a gulf between the two that is wider than the Grand Canyon.

The problem is how to bridge that gulf. The few GAYP players that have wandered into the ACF do not feel at home here if they do not ballot the openings. That is exactly how I feel, and I know for a fact that I am not alone in feeling this way.

I have put forth my ideas on ways to try making the ACF a more attractive organization to nonmember players who might possibly consider joining. Most of those responding to my comments, however, seem to have taken delight in shooting down my point of view as "flawed".

Basically, people are saying that this is a three-move organization and that it is going to remain that way, period. Fine, that is your privilege. The problem of bridging the Grand Canyon will not so easily go away, however.

You guys resolve this dilemma the best way you can. I predict, though, that holding the line against GAYP will cause the ACF to continue struggling or, worse yet, to cease to exist someday. It is up to all of you to decide how to deal with this. It is your problem.[/i]

Self selection

Post by chipschap »

Perhaps the number of GAYP players at tourneys is limited due to self-selection. I don't mind losing and would play in a tourney even if I lost every game, but I would only attempt GAYP. Others in my humble skill category, who also would only attempt GAYP, might not even want to play in the first place faced with the prospect of losing heavily.

Solution - ACF GAYP Coordinaor !

Post by Alex_Moiseyev »

Hello everyone !

From everything I read so far in this topic, I find out that there is a certain amount of players (not necessary novices !), who wants to play in GAYP events only. Even though this number is not so big, I think we shouldn't ingnore this fact.

Here is my solution (and "social motion" for ACF administration)

I propose to create in ACF position of ACF GAYP Coordinator officer and appoint someone. Even more - this position can be added to ACF BY-LAWS. This would help to resolve some problems, promote GAYP and encourage newcomers. This officer will have various responsibilities, such as:

1) Collect and keep tracking a list of GAYP players (only) and players, who desire to play both styles.

2) Contact with players and directors / District managers regards GAYP events

3) Represent any GAYP related issues (rules, scoring, etc) to Exec Committee

4) Advertsie GAYP events in media
etc

***********************************
Alan / Rich / Mac,

if you read this and agree with my proposals, you can make an "official motion"

Regards,

Alex

I think as well that GAYP is the best to start with as 3 move could scare some players away. I think how interesting GAYP can be depends on with whom your playing GAYP. I have to admit that I admire Derek Oldburys GAYP play and its very refreshing to me as he showed great variations in his play. Unfortunately I never had the chance to play him but I believe playing GAYP with him wouldnt be boring for a long long time. :)
Just the all of us together can improve checkers!

GAYP reply

Post by Roberto L Ernest »

Thank-you, Alex! Your idea of creating a GAYP Coordinator is a great one. The person who fills this role would also be someone that GAYP players could voice their concerns to. If there is more GAYP activity in the organization in the future, it is quite possible that this category of ACF member will become more populated in time, which would help the organization and the game to grow. Many, many thanks, Alex.

Also, I would like to thank you too, Dennis, for your comment. While it is true that many three-move players play selected 1115 lines exclusively if they ever play without the ballot, many of us GAYP players do like to mix up the openings, and we do so regularly without the help of any ballot. It makes for a much more exciting game.

I remember six or seven years ago at a GAYP National Tournament in Las Vegas, Nevada, when GAYP World Champion Ron King voluntarily played the Red side of the Bonnie Dundee (1216 2420), which led to an exciting cross-board game that I was able to watch. There was nothing dull about the game at all.

I shall be eagerly looking forward to hearing about the new ACF GAYP Coordinator in the near future. One again, I deeply thank you, Alex.

Ok, you guys wanting to play GAYP the South Carolina Ty is GAYP on June 17 & 18. I will also sponsor an Open Tn GAYP TY here in Morristown, TN sometime in July or August. I'll post the dates and details here when I get them worked out. That will be at least 2 GAYP TYs. We will see how many of you guys show up. If we have a good turn out I will try to hold a GAYP Ty every year. Maybe others will follow suit. Each state could have a 3-move ty and a gayp ty every year if there is enough interest. I'll even let you use your numbered boards, if you want.

GAYP Coordinator

Post by Roberto L Ernest »

The prospect of having a GAYP Coordinator in the ACF is indeed good news. A close friend of mine here in the Chicago area, a GAYP-only player who had dropped out of the organization because of lack of support for the freestyle game, is now talking about joining again. I think Alex' idea is a great one.

Hello everyone, you guys wanted more GAYP Tys, so I am having a TN State GAYP Open Ty, Aug. 12&13, 2006 in Morristown, TN. Details are in the TYs section. I will look forward to seeing you there. With the new WCDF having qualifiers in 3-move and GAYP, I think every state that can should have a 3-move State Ty and a GAYP State TY. Therefore each state that does would have 2 State Champions, 3-move and GAYP.

Alex, it will be 7 rounds, 2 games per round, 2 points for a win, 1 point for a draw. We will have a meeting at 9:30A.M. before the ty to decide time limits, etc., probably 4 rounds on sat and 3 on sun,but maybe 5 on sat and 2 on sun also to be decided at meeting. I will try to raise some money but for now I will guarentee at least $150 1st prize in Masters out of my pocket. Also bring your family, Dollywood and Gatlingburg are only 45 min drive from Morristown. Your family can go to Dollywood and or Gatlingburg, while you play checkers.

GAYP style

Post by m stewart »

Hello,
As Allan posted earlier, I am the new GAYP Club Director.
I am very excited about the ACF and GAYP style of play.
I am both a Life member of the ACF and the GAYP Club.
My Goal is to increase the GAYP style of play and the ACF
membership.
To all who feel the same as I do, lets form ACF clubs and hold
ACF GAYP style tournaments.
For example, charge 10.00 per player (which covers ACF membership without the Bulletin), send in the membership and results of the tournament getting the players a national rating based on their play.
That will bring in more players who only want to play GAYP style and increase their influence in the ACF.
A win win for all concerned :!: :!:
