Since I have decrypted grandmaster games myself I know that you did a very good job, and especially that you did it very fast.

Having said that another bravo! for your efforts in creating booklets and books about important tournaments, endings, Basic Checkers improvements and everything. Not many players on earth can claim to have contributed more for checkers then you did.

On the games:

I especially like the fact that Michele Borghetti won the QT by using the Switcher as a main weapon against 1.11-15. But surely World Champion Sergio Scarpetta will now study each line of this old favorite of the Herd Laddie, and we will see if he can break Miki's defense.

I may also point your attention to the 2nd game Ron King-Igor Martynoy, where after 1.11-15 23-19, 2.9-14 22-17, 3.5-9 26-23, 4. 7-11 17-13,5.11-16 25-22, 6. 3-7 Igor tried the unsusal 6. ... 22-17, (6. ... 29-25 pp)

when Ron in return played the dubious 7. 7-11?! instead of the much better theory move 7.8-11.
After 7.7-11 31-26 he then played 8. 16-20 ? (8.2-7 seems to be the only way to equalize), which migth already be a dead loss after Igor's reply 8. ... 19-16. This puzzles me very much, as a databade search reveals that 8 . ... 19-16 was indeed played in 1989 by ... Ron King himself (!) at the US nationals against Bailey to a white win.

I suspect that Ron again was not well-prepared and that it is very risky to enter a QT without special preparation these days, even for one of the strongest players in history.

In the forthcoming days I will try to annotate a few games.

Ingo, it should be 7. ... 31-26. Ron King vs Igor Martynov, Round 6 Game 2 is arguably the most critical game of the tournament, with Igor playing the role of "spoiler."
The GAYP Qualifier was much more competitive than the final score indicates! Certainly Kent Layne must have been the most improved player of the tournament!
For the GAYP Women's World Championship Tournament we finally got to see Amangul vs Nadiya for the first time, and hopefully not the last!

I corrected a mistyped move in Rose - Morgan in round 6 game 2. The first Bernini - Durdyev game in round 6 is illegal, but I have left it that way. And I noticed that Bashim Durdyyev spells his last name with two y's, but I have spelled it with one y, to make it searchable in the game databases.

As it turns out the Welsh Open was a good predictor of who would win the GAYP Qualifier and GAYP Women's World Championship!

Fresh off his title defense of the World Three-Move Championship, Michele Borghetti took first place overall in the Welsh Open.

Amangul Berdiyeva took first place in the Women's Division of the Welsh Open, and fifth place (out of 20) overall.
Nadiya Chyzhevska took second place in the Women's Division of the Welsh Open, and sixth place overall.

Recently I've published my Report about my trip to Knighton on Russian site. Just for for ACF-Forum Readers I translated it into English.

Just two “GAYP” Checkers competitions took place in Knighton, a small Welsh town close to the border of England – Welsh Open and World Qualifier which defined a challenger for the World title match. The first, so called “warming up” tournament, was considered as one of the European Cup stages as well as World Cup. It was held on Swiss system in 11 rounds by one game with time control of 30 minutes till the end of the game. In addition to the British players the participants of the just finished match for the “3-move” World title Michele Borghetti (Italy) and Lubabalo Kondle (South Africa) took part here. The World champion among women Nadiya Chyzhevska from Ukraine also played. From Turkmenistan there arrived Amangul Berdiyeva who came back to the big sport after the birth of her child, together with her brother Bashim Durdyev. From other countries there were the representatives of the USA, Italy, Netherlands and Germany. The tournament was impressive for its efficiency and it is in “GAYP” from which Russian draughts players have long refused because of draw-death! As expected the winner was the “already warmed” Michele Borghetti with a tremendous result of +8 from 11. The second place with 7 wins and 2 loses went to Lubabalo Kondlo, and the third was the Italian Matteo Bernini +4, he passed unbeaten the tournament as well as Micky. Bashim Durdyev played very unevenly, he had 10 “bloody” games (6 wins and 4 loses) and took the 4th place. Women played well: Amangul was 5th with +2 and Nadiya - 6th with +1.

The second and the main event was qualitatively more impressive because of the arrival of the strong players from Barbados, USA and Ireland and departure of the weaker British ones. The women separated and held their Female World Championship. The time control for the games was increased – 1 hour for the first 30 moves and half an hour for each subsequent 15. The rivals played two games with each other now.

The men’s tournament held on the Swiss system in 8 rounds ended very unexpectedly. Just 6 participants showed the same result +3 and the winner was determined by Sonnenborn-Berger coefficient. So the order of the places at the top depended on the results of the games from below. The strongest player was also the luckiest – Michele Borghetti. He is the challenger to Sergio Scarpetta now and it will be the match of equal chances: fifty – fifty. Further places were distributed as follows – 2.Matteo Bernini (Italy), 3.Ron King (Barbados), 4.Richard Beckwith (USA), 5.Igor Martynov (Germany), 6.Lubabalo Kondlo (South Africa) – all together 19 points. In the last round Beckwith had a winning position against Bernini and he could have won the tournament, however, he missed this opportunity. I also had a real chance to victory in the QT. Unfortunately, I missed some important wins and didn’t realize such a unique chance. Nevertheless I cannot complain about my sporting fate, as I was able to beat the legend of Checkers – Ron King and could win even in the second game as well. Thereby I could repeat the surprise of Bashim Durdyev, the author of the biggest sensation of the Checkers tournament of the 2nd WMSG in Lille, scoring a double win over Ron King…

It didn’t happen without its curiosities. 4 days after the end (!) of the tournament when the prizes were already handed out and all participants had been long departed, it was found out that the judges counted the coefficients incorrectly, as the prolonged last game of the tournament between Anthony Boyle (England) and Colin Price (Barbados) finished not in a draw as they considered but in a win of the Barbadosian. It didn’t affect the outcome of the 1st place but it changed the order of the 2-3-4th places. First Matteo Bernini was awarded the 4th place and Ron King and Richard Beckwith – respectively 2nd and 3rd. In hindsight Matteo Bernini got the 2nd place… My congratulation and condolence to Matteo!

The female tournament resulted in a persistent and intense struggle, too, and the winner was also determined by the coefficient. As a result, the World champion was Amangul Berdiyeva from Turkmenistan, she managed to regain her title. Nadiya Chyzhevska (Ukraine) got the second place and Wilma Brench from Barbados won the third. The crosstables with all result can be found on my Checkers site: http://home.arcor.de/checkers64/.

The organizer of the tournaments in Knighton John Morgan is a very interesting person. He has 7 children and 12 grandchildren. He took much care to hold the competitions at a high level. We played at the guest hall of the main hotel of the city with the same name “Knighton”. The local city authorities were invited to the official opening of the tournaments. The hospitable John Morgan with his wife and children organized 2 lunches for the participants of the competitions at his home. However, such a high-ranking tournaments haven’t been used for the promotion of our game. There was nowhere any advertising, nor press nor television on the tournaments. There weren’t organized any activities with schoolchildren and local residents. And the saddest thing was that no women from Great Britain or Ireland at all participated in the tournaments in Knighton and for the junior championship no participant arrived whatsoever. This year I witnessed how about 200 of the best children in Italy attended a final of the school games of draughts. It is an amazing and striking contrast to here…

As for me, I spent my time in Knighton very busy and interestingly. Before the trip I contacted John Morgan for affordable housing. There is no support for Checkers in Germany and I have to take part in all competitions at my own expense. Therefore the financial aspect was very important for me. The only alternative was to stay home. John offered me his caravan-trailer with which his grandson goes to rugby competitions and a bicycle in addition. I accepted his offer with pleasure.

My Hotel 5 stars and Ferrary

My rich tourist experience was very useful for me now. I had already traveled by bicycle with tents across Germany, Holland, Italy and France as well as around Corsica. John brought his caravan on to the parking place which was 5 minutes’ walk from our game hall. In fact, Knighton is a small town and everything is close there.

Romantic, but the nights were cool and I was regularly awoken by the rain clattering on the roof and by the parking of big trucks. In the mornings after refreshing gymnastics and jogging in a forest I went to visit the neighbors for boiled water. Of course, such a pleasure does not suit everyone and is designed only for very big fans of Checkers. After games I always had a couple of hours for biking and exploring the picturesque surroundings. The nature in Wales is delightful. The landscapes are very green. Everywhere cows and sheep are grazing. Full idyll!







I struck up fascinating acquaintances to the locals, very friendly and hospitable people. I met some artists when I climbed up to the ruins of the Knucklas Castle. They invited me home to take a look at their picture gallery and how they cook bread, treated me to pizza and wine… I myself without a map found the country cottage where the Turkmenian team was placed. It appeared to be not such an easy task – through the country roads without lights about 5 miles from the city Knighton and each house there has its own name. I spent two nights with them listening to the stories about the life in Turkmenistan. It is interesting, they told me that a huge tourist complex is under construction on the Caspian Sea in Avaz now. It is planned to have visa-free entrance of tourists for inflow of foreign currency there. And then Turkmenistan will organize the Checkers tournaments there! With pleasure I’ll come, if they will invite me…

In the evenings I could not stay alone in the caravan and I made long night walks in Knighton with Anatoly Yatsenko, coach of Nadiya.

On the way back I spent a day in Birmingham.



Just at this time there was a free Festival weekend. The theatrical and music performances were held everywhere in the city. I listened to a magnificent jazz concert. However the main final attraction “Maudit Sonnants” occurred downtown in the evening when it got dark. Colorfully dressed up clowns, witches, musicians and acrobats with torches rushed among the crowd, then they sat down on a carousel, a crane lifted them over the area and the musicians continued to play on bells and drums and the air acrobats turned on trapezes. An impressive show!

Igor, many thanks for nice report, beautiful photos and interesting analyses! Your remark "the weaker British ones" grabbed my attention Are you aware that Ron King has legal British passport ?

From photos I very much enjoyed "mechanical" clocks rather then digital. It is my favor since 1966 when I started to play draughts in Soviet Union at age 7.

With digital clocks I have less control what happened, arrow and flag helps me better to visualize things.

Anyway, I noticed Richard missed a win against Matteo in the last round and rumors say that he also missed couple more wins. Anyway, 100% Italian GAYP match between two current World Champions Sergio Scarpetta and Michele Borghetti will be very interesting and attractive.
