Re: 3 moves US National 2016.
We have changed the format for the 2016 National 3-Move Tournament. This will facilitate the problem with airline and motel reservations.
All three categories, Masters, Majors and Minors will play four days, July 27, 28, 29 and 30 which is Wednesday through Saturday.
The Masters will play 12 rounds. That will be three rounds or 6 games per day. This has been increased from 10 rounds to 12 rounds as originally scheduled.
Majors and Minors will play 10 rounds as originally scheduled. That will be 2, 3, 3, 2 rounds Wednesday through Saturday.
We are expecting the biggest prize fund ever. We may have $13,000.
The ACF Bulletin, Missouri Checker Association Newsletter and North Carolina Checker Association will reflect these changes.

10 or 12 rounds in Swiss event may work well if we have more than 20-25 players. If we have less players - we may need Round Robin.
Round Robin for 12 players (11 rounds) also may work if we use rating for selection and endorsement.

We had 19 players in the Masters category last year at the Branson, Missouri Mixer. Hopefully we will have at least that many for the National 3-Move this year. This means we could not play a round robin because of the large number of players.

Re: 3 moves US National 2016.
2 years ago I asked players in Master Division - how many days they prefer to play 3-moves National. Most of them (not all) choose 5 days, few preferred 4 days.
For me as more days as better - more fun, less pressure. I am in favor of 5 days. I also don't like an idea to change traditions: for several decades 3-moves National Master Division was played 6 days (Monday-Saturday). It's easy to reduce number of days but it will be very hard to raise it again.
In my eyes reducing number of days and simplifying the process - unsafe way for USA checkers.
Respectfully,

Re: 3 moves US National 2016.
I personally agree with Alex in preferring 5 days - it feels less compacted that way and more like a National Tournament. However, my schedule is easier to work around and I won't have to fly in, so its not a huge deal for me personally.
I absolutely agree with the use of clocks in the Masters division. 30 moves per hour per player is the standard and from my experience that seems appropriate, but I'm well aware that it is possible for 1 game with a long ending to go several hours using this format, so I've yet to really see a reasonable solution to this problem when trying to make a round time limit that will fit in with a schedule.
As far as the # of rounds, more checkers is always better for me. 12-14 rounds is perfectly fine. However, even though I can not speak for Majors/Minors, I can't think why they wouldn't want to play just as many rounds as the Masters. Pretty much all of them play faster than us anyway, so I would think they would want to play more checkers too. After all, that is why we are there, to play checkers.

Yes, and perhaps with five days we can make time for a real ACF business meeting, instead of the usual ten minutes of arguing about scoring formats. Of course one of the trade-offs is that we'd need to rent the playing room for an extra day.

You fellows are starting to confuse me on the what, why, and how of the national tournament. Can you give me an easier explanation of what we are going to do?

If you let masters play 12 rounds of two games each, majors and minors should be allowed the same for the same time frame of Wed thru Sat!!

Re: 3 moves US National 2016.
Questions for the Majors.
1. Are the rounds 4 games or 2?
2. How will it be scored? Game Points , Match points, or will this actually be decided at the pre tournament meeting?

In order to facilitate airline schedules and motel reservations we have changed the format for the upcoming national 3-move tourney.
All three categories will play four days, July 27, 28, 29 & 30 which is Wednesday through Saturday.
The Masters will play 12 rounds. That will be three rounds or six games per day. This has been increased from 10 rounds to 12 rounds as originally scheduled.
Majors and minors will play 10 rounds as originally scheduled. That will be 2, 3, 3, 2 rounds Wednesday through Saturday.
We are expecting to have more prize money than any tourney in recent history... possibly $13,000.
The distribution will not be determined until the day of the tourney.
The ACF Bulletin, ACF website, Missouri Checker Association Newsletter and North Carolina Checker Association will reflect these changes.

Re: 3 moves US National 2016.
Last news or rumors from Rome: GAYP reigning World Champion Sergio Scrapetta showed some interest to USA National 2016 in Branson. Cross fingers! If he will be able to come and play - that will be great news indeed for all of us. I really hope Sergio will be able to make it and I promise him with all my honesty - it won't be an easy walk around for him!

The tournament starts in a month, so if you haven't made your hotel reservations yet, do it soon! I confirmed today that the group rate is still available.
