I was trying to find a name of the player in the old ACF bulletins and again as before wondered who it was that created such highly detailed and technical reports, analyses, history month after month.
Found names like Richard Fortman and W. B. Grandjean - who was the latter one?

Also was dismayed at the numorous holes in monthly buckets, I scanned what I had but no one responded to my request for the missing issues, surely we need to preserve ACF history.

I recently posted a 1987-12 issue of the Irish Draughts Journal. If I had more issues it would justify making a magazines page.

I finally found the original Gould's The Game of Draughts. Problems, Critical Positions, and Games!

All in all I had 15 additions to the Straight Checkers room this year, would be nice if European players start contributing their material.

I posted some bits and pieces collected over a long time, if someone needs a project he can try to collect and combine into a single PDF newspaper clips such as Otago Daily, Board, etc.

Derek Oldbury's Encyclopedia is by far the longest and most expensive project I ever took, just posted volume 4.

Any comment on the Oldbury's Encyclopedia? How do you rate it against other great books?

It is simply the best multiple-volume work on stategy and the midgame ever written.

It is informative and entertaining at the same time.

As a start I would recommend to get a copy of the one-volume summary "Student Encyclopedia", and after working through it, read the multi-volume work.

Oldbury was the Praeceptor Mundi for draughts/checkers, as was Ryan before him and as Richard Pask is today.

Oldbury's Encyclopedia is a classic, if not the classic in draughts/checkers literature per se.

Yes, his “Magnum Opus, Summa Com Laude”.

Also worthy of note are his magazines
The Square World 1966/67, and
A Game of Draughts 1946/47.

The latter includes a devastating critique of a booklet by Herman Hoogland (Utrecht) in which a new form of Draughts was proposed,
based on a hodge-podge of the rules from several variants of the game, such as horizontal and vertical moves, backward captures, long kings etc.
It also contains a brilliant series entitled The Last Hundred Moves, written in catechism format (question and response) dealing with the End Game.
I have no doubt it was inspired by the Ithica chapter in Ulysses.
(Brings back memories from days of yore, when every schoolchild, growing up, learned the Catechism off by heart.)

P S Also reminds me of an old phonetical joke question:
What kind of toothpick would a non-believer use?
Answer: A gnaw stick. :)

"Teacher of the World"

"In Chess literature Tarrasch occupies a unique position. Praeceptor Germaniae he was called ... later it was praeceptor mundi."

The term was also applied to the painter Albrecht Durer (1471- 1528).
