"Before Clocks"--answer
"Checker Trivia question of the Day?" These may have been used in timing a checker match? (Cont.)

In chess they first used hour-glasses, so I guess they tried it in checkers, too.

At the first International Chess Tournament London 1851, there were no clocks used and absolutely NO time limits.
Many players were reknown for their "patience" in lost or dead-drawn positions.
When, in the quarter finals, the "reknown" players Williams and Mucklow played a game against each other , the tounament book remarks, that the secretary recording this game noted that "...both players fell asleep"
Even before that event they imposed time limits in some matches, taken with hour glasses, altough the match L
