Hello Checker/Draughts Players:
I have been reading with interest all the comments on the use of clocks, etc. in tournaments. I have and will always be a strong advocate for promoting professionalism in our game. Much of this can be accomplished thru consistency at tournaments around the World.
In Cookstown, N. Ireland a couple of years ago I had the opportunity of entering that tournament and was impressed with the professional attitude taken by organizers and referees. Boards were set up each day with your name on a card at the board you were to play. Your clock was in place and game recording sheets were at each table. The referee would walk to each board and have you select an opening. I applaud this type of format.
In the USA World of Checkers standardization at all tournaments leads to more professionalism and a better public perception of our game. I like to see clocks used, games recorded (legibly and then turned over to referee), use of regulation playing equipment (eliminate worn out and tattered boards). All of this does nothing but enhance our image as players to the public. I have been to some tournaments and players persist in using the old 3 move deck if not a sanctioned ACF event. Uniformity is essential for the game to prosper.
I note more emphasis on one's rating than anything else. I am just an average player, but fully realize what it will take to brighten the image that Checkers projects.
Next month will be our ACF Youth and National Tournaments. Clocks will be used, the adopted new 3-move deck will be used and game recording sheets (Masters) will be used. I would love to see this done at all tournaments. I applaud Dr. Beckwith and Mr. Gene Ellison for requiring ACF Membership for the Masters in Ohio and Illinois Tournaments.
Sincerely:
Alan Millhone, President

Re: Comments from ACF Headquarters :-)
i am not in masters and i record my games just for practice and to get used to it, i would also be willing to use clocks and i am sure a few others would also that arent in masters ......i am not sure do we even have enough clocks for that to happen?
Re: Comments from ACF Headquarters :-)
Having seen Mr Presidents post re the encouragement of clocks and seemingly without much cross body support so far ,do i detect mutiny in the ranks on this matter??
Alan Millhone is one of the most available Presidents the ACF ever had and a true hands -on guy but the silence is deafening.....why?/
Im sure if you disagree with him on this issue he wont bite your head off so lets have some rational opinions and open the debate up,thats what forums are for!!
Dont let the person you are stop you from being the person you wanna be!!
