I know he won the British Open in 2006, but unless I'm mistaken, he seems to have been more active in chess than in draughts. Has he competed in a lot of draughts tournaments over the years?

Evidently he is a very active Shogi player as well.

Yes, he played in several of the tournaments held in Britain and Ireland over the years.
