pdn vs. txt files

Post by jimloy »

Many of the files that I uploaded are fairly large, much larger than a single Forum entry can handle. Instead of splitting such a file into dozens of pieces, I have chosen to attach it as one file. You will then have to login if you want to download the file. Also, these files have a .pdn extension, so that you can import them into a database such as Aurora Borealis or KingsRow. Unfortunately, the .pdn extension is also used by Paint.net for images, and that is how the .pdn extension is usually described on the Internet. And your local expert will not believe you that our .pdn files are actually text files that can be opened by WordPad or Word. And double-clicking on one of these .pdn files will automatically load your favorite paint program unless you associate the .pdn extension with WordPad using the Windows control panel.

I guess it is actually easy to open a pdn checkers file with Word (or WordPad).  Don't double-click the pdn file.  Instead, run Word, then use the File/Open pull-down menu option to open the pdn file.  Don't type the name of the file in the space provided;  Instead, there is a choice of file formats below (or to the right of) that space which shows file formats. If it doesn't already show 'All files (*.*)' then pull down and choose that option. Then you can choose the .pdn file that you want, once you have found the correct folder where that file is (which may take some searching).

What do you like about checkers?: Mostly the good memories with my grandparents! Now that I've got children of my own who are old enough to learn about the game, I'd like to know a bit more about it and be able to teach it in a better way.

Thanks for the tip, I got my hands on a couple .pdn files and was hard pressed to find what to do with them... It now works, awesome!

I found it simplest to add the ".txt" extension to the name, for example rename "myfile.pdn" to "myfile.pdn.txt". Then you will have no problems downloading or opening the file. When ready ti import into Aurora rename it back to "myfile.pdn"
