Game 31 is a beauty.

I had thought Alex might try a new defence here and indeed it came! White's response was thematic and led into a neat bridge endgame where Black possessed the perfect timing to pitch out for a pretty draw.

Whether Tinsley, Long and Hellman's 10-15 defence is necessarily 'best' is perhaps moot. The point is that it is the defence about which most is known and is therefore likely to remain the favourite. The same reasoning applies to many of the favoured defences, and it takes imaginative players like Alex and Sergio, assisted to some extent by the leading programs, to re-demonstrate the enormous scope of our great game.

My criteria for picking defense line - Minimum scope.

This 12-16 allows white only one main attack which Sergio played. All other continuation lead to even positions or even giving red some edge.

The way Sergio played, really goes into just one ending and one defensive idea.

So … if we compare classic 10-15 and 12-16, obviously 10-15 generates more scope than 12-16 and as result - gives white more winning chances.

Game 13 (11-15 21-17; 9-13) was another very important one.

Here, Alex employed Karl Albrecht's excellent in-between move with 31-26! which I mentioned both in World Championship Draughts (Oldbury v Hallett) and Complete Checkers.

This appears to improve both the original 25-21 (hard ending) and the modern 25-22 - and seeks to get the best of both worlds.

Namely, after Sergio's 6-10 squeeze (which wouldn't be played if 25-21 were played first), White's 25-21!; 10-17 21-14 is better than 25-22; 10-17 22-13, (returning to pp), since the White man is better placed on 14 than 13. After the better 25-21!; 10-17 21-14 the 12-16 in-and-out shot leads to an immediate draw, whereas after 25-22; 10-17 22-13 the same shot is somewhat touchy for White (Tinsley drew with White v Banks but Hallett lost with White v Oldbury).

More broadly, the attack Sergio put on is pretty much the best Black has to offer against the 30-25 defence. This being the case, in freestyle play 21-17 would seem to be the most restrictive reply to 11-15. (As I argued in Lesson 115 of Complete Checkers: Insights)
