Re: sixth received
This must be "The russians are coming, The russians are coming" all over again. (take that, Wittiker Walt!)
Moiseyev and the Strugatski Brothers.
Same day delivery of "Sixth" and "Trudno Byt' Bogom" (English translation).
And yesterday I reshelved all my checkers books.
Thank you, Alex.
It's a good day to play checkers in the New England rain.

Re: sixth received
Thanks Clayton, maybe I did misunderstand Matthew's intention as I did take it that he was challenging me.
Matthew if that was not your intention I apologize. I guess because of your statement before you asked me to play you, I misunderstood your intention and took it as a challenge to me. If you are ever passing through East Tennessee I would be happy to play you for the fun of it.

Great, thanks alot
I know the Internet is more convenient for me to play, so I don't know when the opportunity will arise for me to be there and play you. I will send you a message, as I am curious your distance from me.

Re: sixth received
I received my copy of Sixth yesterday. This is the most beautiful checker book ever, by a long ways. Alex' typesetting is professionally done and is very artistic. Of course the games are world class. The annotations are everything we expect from someone with Alex' checker skills, and maybe more: lots of deep analysis and many glimpses into his thoughts as he played. And the diagrams (485 of them) look very nice. All books must have errors (some have hundreds), but, as far as I can tell so far, the one or two errors in this book are hidden so well that I may never find them. I am very impressed. Wait wait, I may have found a grammatical error. There may be a few of those. But that is part of the charm.

Resistance
We have so many tools to use to become better checker players: Checkerboard and KingsRow with or without the 8 piece database, a lot of pp online covering Basic Checkers, Kears, New Openings, and much, much more, for free. So why should you ever buy a book or a membership? I can think of two reasons that are good enough:
1. After playing moiseyev for many years, working on my own game deficiencies, collecting many of his games for analysis, and after a personal short review of his book I decided to buy “Sixth” just now through the ACF website. Many of the free tools available on the internet still do not give us the all important "moiseyev's thoughts per move throughout the game" which gives insight to the psychology, the theory, and the calculations used to be the World Champion. In short, the first reason to buy a book is because the material is of great importance.
2. The second reason is a common reason many of the top players support and perhaps most players-and that is to purchase the book or membership to support that organization selling it.

Studying Sixth!
I have been studying my copy of Sixth ever since I picked it up from the Nationals. It is a very good book and I recommend it to anyone who wishes to learn more about Checkers.

shr wrote:It was Ed Trice idea giving the number to position, and I didn't have much objections. When you get my book SIXTHyou can see, that the words "7th position" are belong only to Ed Trice. Later Richard Beckwith started using it
Just some background information on this. At the time, I was only aware of 1st through 6th position, I did not know there was a "7th" or "8th" as someone has recently mentioned.
After going over the endgame, particularly the 6x6 subset, I felt that the permutations and subvariations were a worthy class to study stand alone. Therefore, the parent position was worthy of some form of special recognition. While the position itself might not come forth fairly often, the underlying concepts regarding the theme of the subsequent play surely would arise from countless trillions of possible arrangements.
So why not just label it as "important" by giving it a standard identification, such as "7th position."
That was my original thinking. Nothing more, nothing less.
I hope this explains why I put forth the idea.

I got my 6th!
Hey Alex,
I got my "6th" today in the mail, thanks! By the way, on the inside back cover, "4th" was spelled "Forth" which is a computer language, not what comes after "3rd" (should be "Fourth").

I like the style of the print and the pages, and I am glad you went with a hardback cover.
And now I can say:
"I have read 'Sixth' every day (since I received it)."

Re: sixth received
It is a milestone in checkers/daughts literature.
If not for his successes in tournament and match play, Alex will always be remembered as the first World Champion to have fully annotated his best games and published it for the benfit of the whole checker world.
Being a chess book collector I was missing a really good best games collection ("biography") of the top players badly.
So far Shuffet's "Checkers The Tinsley Way" and Call's "RD Yates" were small and unsufficient atttempts in that direction, but Alex book easily holds even against the best chess biograpies "300 Chess Games" by Siegbert Tarrasch, "Fire On Board" by Alexei Shirov, "Secret of Grandmaster Play" by John Nunn, "The Life and Games of Mikhail Tal" by Mikhail Tal, "On The Way To The World Championship" by Alexander Alekhine or "Analiticheskie i kricheskie raboty" by Mikhail Botvinik.
I can only compare it to these masterpieces, as the book is simply the nonpareil in checkers/draughts literature.
You may not have won the US Nationals this year Alex, but you have left your mark in the World of Checkers this year and for many years, I guess, like no one else did, honestly.

He will win the World Championship match. I dont think nationals is as important
Exactly, Joshua, but not quite.
No success matches his achievement in writing this fine work of art.
