In 1997 the English Open was held to celebrate 100 years of the EDA (English Draughts Association).
It was left to Hugh Devlin, with his historian's hat on, to show through careful research that it had actually been formed in 1898!
Imagine my surprise, reading ID&C (International Draughts & Checkers) the other day (for the 100th time) to discover on Page 39 that the 1958 Tinsley-Oldbury match had been arranged to celebrate the diamond jubilee of the EDA. That is, they knew about the 1898 date in 1958, but had forgotten by 1997!
EDA 1898!
