"The Best Layed Plans of Mice and Men"--Alex
This means that no matter how much effort and planning one puts forth or how much hard work is done some things just don't always come out the way you would have intended them to. Such seems to be the case with this raffle situation. Richard Beckwith stated that the raffle held at the National Checker Tournament "was yours Alex". Therefore I would appreciate it very much if you would "refund" our $45 and inturn I shall ask Alan (or whoever has the book we purchased for our raffle) to return this book to you--probably at the Ohio or Indiana Checker Tournaments. The purpose of both raffles was to raise money for the ACF, which came out to be around $50 I am told. I don't expect the ACF to refund this money to us (even though Alan made that suggestion), which would mean that only $5 was raised for the ACF. If our raffle (being planned first) was allowed to go through I feel that more money would have been raised--more $1 tickets and 6 tickets for $5 would have been sold verus $2 tickets and 3 tickets for $5, but in any case $50 was raised. Plus since I bought the book from you for our raffle that would have been $95 between you and the ACF; whereas when you donated the book there was no profit in it for you other than "PR". I will be looking forward to receiving our "refund" of $45--within my lifetime I hope; which will buy a checker set or two for our museum. I am very sorry that this project did not work out for either of us. Please feel free to email or call me if you have any questions or comments concerning this matter. Yours friend, Ms. Becky

SIXTH book..........................
Hello Ms. Becky:
In my possession I have the SIXTH book in question. I told Dr. Beckwith at the end of the week (after the drawing) that I would be responsible for this book and take it home with me.
Sincerely:
Alan Millhone, President

Alan please return this book to Alex (when you see him at one of the upcoming checker tournaments). This whole thing turned out to be a major disaster as far as we are concerned. One tries to do the right thing to help promote the ACF, Alex's book and checkers in general, but sometimes good intentions comes back to hit you in the face (or butt), leaving one wondering why you even took the time and made the effort to help make a difference.

Re: "The Best Layed Plans of Mice and Men"
Alan / Ms. Becky,
this book doesn't belong to me and not my property. I also cannot accept it as gift. For the time now ACF is the only owner of this book, because it was received as donation. As far as I know - donations usually are never taken back !
I trully don't know - which book we used for raffle, and which one Alan has now, but it is not so important for me. I had donated book and it was accepted - thats all I know.
I tried "to split" responsibilities for raffle, and my offer is still open.
Alan / Rich,
if you are interesting, I want to remind you my idea - use book (maybe two ?
) for extra drawing among buyers of National games. This will be an extra stimulation for people to buy games. This offer also will be extended to ones, who already paid.
Regards,
Alex

Re: "The Best Layed Plans of Mice and Men"
Alex you may want to check the Ohio state commercial laws, which will tell you the you are responsible to pay Ohio State Taxes on your book sales (and also federal taxes); plus the Ohio commercial laws will state that refunds are to be given unless otherwise designated (and you have not stated anywhere in your promotions of your book that refunds will not be given). And donations can be taken back if they were not used for the specific purpose that that donor intended, which in this case it was not. And if you read Richards posting he states that" it was your book that was being raffled"--(and you previously posted the same thing), not ours. So kindly "refund" our $45 and this case will become past history. By selling your wares you have taken on the role of becoming a merchant, therefore you are subject to the commercial laws of your state. The day after Christmas more refunds are made than on any other day of the year--for many reasons and that is part of commerce that you have now become part of. I have no use for 2 copies of your book and I do not intend to become involved in any more promotional situations that may as this one did-backfire on me. So please just "refund" our money--and I am sure you will not have any trouble reselling the book at upcoming checker tournaments.

You broke my heart, man
If it was your intention - you successfully accomplished your goal.

We can see now - how true is this statement.

Re: "The Best Layed Plans of Mice and Men"
Alex I quess your proverb is true "Any Initiative Must Be Punished" because this whole raffle was our idea and we are the ones ending up being punished as a result in trying to promote your new book as well as raising money for the ACF at the same time. Now the ACF will have only gained a mere $5 from your raffle; whereas you gained $45, so who's interest was your raffle promoting Alex--yours or the ACF's? We certainly had nothing to gain by participating in this raffle or any other raffle. As you know we try to promote checkers on all levels of play--when and where ever we can--and when we can afford to do so. It was also our intention to give away copies of your new book at the upcoming Ohio and Indiana checker tournaments. Many of our close friends play in both of these checker tournaments. This idea has now be scrubbed for apparent reasons.

Re: "The Best Layed Plans of Mice and Men"
Alex and I have been good friends for over 10 years now and I can't see that as changing anytime soon. Each year we have had at least one major confrontation--all of which we survived and this one we will survive also. If Alex decides not to repay me then perhaps I will have to allow visitors here to shoot cannon balls at his picture--who knows--which hangs in our museum--$1 each or 6 cannon balls for $5, until our $45 is reclaimed , but on the other hand that may put holes in the walls; so I will have to think of something else--maybe a bottle of Vodka will do the trick.

For the record, I originally meant that Alex's proposal was the only raffle that I was aware of at the time. In the end, I don't know whose book donation was actually used either, which Alex also mentioned.
