ACF Medina Select games example

Post by rich beckwith »

See ACF home page for news about Medina games packages. Below I will offer text of a sample game, annotated by Alex Moiseyev. In the actual select games package, each game will typically be presented with 1-3 diagrams.
****
J. Morrison vs C. Nash Rd 1, G1 Opening: 12-16 21-17 9-13

12-16 21-17 9-13 24-20 11-15 20-11 7-16 28-24 5-9 24-20 9-14 (A) 20-11 14-21 (B) 27-24 8-12 (C) 22-18 (D) 15-22 25-18 10-15 18-14 15-18 32-27 18-22 26-17 13-22 24-20 (E) 12-16 27-24 1-5 23-18 6-10 14-7 3-10 30-26 10-15 26-17 15-22 17-14 2-6 11-7 22-26 31-22 6-10 Draw

A. 8-11 here also sounds and worthy to try, but 3-7 is weak after 20-11 7-16 23-18 with following 26-23 after trade ... White best. Continue after 8-11 (from “Kingsrow” opening book): 25-21 1-5 23-18 4-8 17-14 10-17 21-14 13-17 22-13 15-22 26-17 9-18 29-25 3-7 31-26 16-19 etc. Draw

B. Kind of attractive position. See diagram #3 after trade.

C. 1-5 here seems to be another survivor!

D. There were rumors circulated during the tournament that white probably missed a win in this position by playing the powerful 23-19, and even Marion Tinsley once missed this win. In fact, this move, 23-19, is certainly the strongest reply forcing red to make all star moves after this. However the final verdict is unchanged – red still has a draw in this position! Continue after 23-19: 3-8 26-23 1-5 31-27 5-9 32-28 13-17 22-13 9-14 25-22 14-17 22-18 15-22 23-18 8-15 18-11 10-14 27-23 22-25 29-22 17-26 19-16 12-19 23-16 26-31 24-20 6-9 etc. Draw

E. See diagram #4 before 24-20. 24-19 could be another strong option here. Continue from diagram : 24-19 3-7 30-26 7-16 26-17 1-5 14-10 6-24 27-11 12-16 17-14 16-20 etc. Draw

Rich, I already posted earlier on forum another fine sample under GAMES section  However - as more as better ! To see all selected annotated games you have to pay $15 to ACF

A few corrections:

I was Red in that game, not White

Note D, it was Tinsley who played the losing 9-14 and Chamblee who missed the win in their 1952 World Title Match

maybe you can include the game in your annotations?

"red still has a draw in this position! Continue after 23-19: 3-8 26-23 1-5(A) 31-27 5-9 32-28 13-17 22-13 9-14 25-22 14-17 22-18(B) 15-22 23-18 8-15 18-11 10-14 27-23 22-25 29-22 17-26 19-16 12-19 23-16 26-31 24-20 6-9 etc. Draw"

A - Tinsley actually went 6-9, *32-28(Chamblee went 23-18), 1-6, 31-27 same

B - I am not sure what level you set the program on, but I do not believe Red has a draw after *29-25, x, 25-22 as given in the Tinsley-Chamblee match annotations

I am not sure the 1-5 in your Note C draws either, as it seems like it might can be forced into the same play unless Red wants to lose a different way.

It'll be interesting if you still find a draw in that position, but I do not believe the play you provided will work.

Clay, do you want to annotate this game ? You played it and also you better study is as your comments show. I was unaware of this classic game, only "rumors" (actually based on our short conversation after the game).

29-25 is awesome !

If you are interesting - I can send you Word dociument with annotation for this game with diagrams and you will revise it.

Thanks for corrections. Yes - it will be worthy to include game Tinsley vs Chamblee into comments.

Alex

BTW. Don't you think after 23-19 8-12 ... 32-27 also wins ? If so - this must be also included for full complete coverage.

well, in the essence of space, you can't show every win

that game just got my attention, obviously because I played it, but also because I had play on it and was very interested in how it would draw after you said that you found a draw

i really do not have time to do full annotations, but if u want to add the corrections and e-mail me I will look it over
