3 move qualifier

Ron King has won the 3 Move Qualifier in Stonehaven this week by a large margin.

He scored 23 points over 8 rounds. Next were Bagtiyar Durdyev and William Docherty both on 19 points. Bagtiyar scored exactly one more Sonneborn-Berger point than William.

So Ron gets to play a challenge match with Alex Moiseyev for the third time. Second time as challenger.

This challenge match must be played in 2007. The WCDF is inviting bids to host this match with effect from now. Closing date is 1 October 2006.

Anyone thinking of making a bid should contact me or Hugh Devlin as soon as possible.

Having talked to MYles Hannigan on the phone.....apparently Shane MCCosker in the 2nd last round had Ron on the ropes in a single corner loss....but he slithered away

Myles also had Ron in a headlock in the pioneer in the very last round again he slipped the noose..

The sign of a champion no doubt!!

Hello everyone...got home last night from Stonehaven. The Morrisons and C. Nash left for Edinbugh yesterday morning hoping to go home a day or two early (if flight available), but not sure how that worked out.

I enjoyed the great weather and toured 3 castles. Wish I could have played a little better...also, wins seemed hard to come by for some reason. (Others, such as Clayton and Mustafa, had similar experiences). The only round I won was against Hannigan (with weak side of Paxton opening, no less!) -- all my others 7 rounds were drawn, regardless of whom I played.

Anyway, Ron King was by far the best last week and beat Docherty 2 games on Day 1, so tournament was never that close after that. S. McCosker is only 19 and showed excellent pp knowledge in my 2 games with him.

it was a blast in scotland - only wish I could have played a little better

i second what richard said, everybody seemed to play me tough, even the players who finished lower than me - there were no easy points in this tournament - hard to do well when you can't get wins

i lost 3 games, 1 to each of the top 3 finishers, but 2 of them were embarassingly bad... but only managed to win 1 game

i'm not exactly sure what u meant by that tommy - i'm sure your proud of him, he is a good player and very well versed in pp, but i am 22 now, going to be 23 in less than a month, certainly not under-age...

Were meals provided and what was the expense that was picked up from the Hosts of this event per Hotel room, etc.? Just a general idea would help me determine what I would be looking to bid for the next event.

The breakfast was included with the lodging. Outside of that, we were on our own for meals and snacks. I do commend Graham Young for kicking back 160 pounds to all the participants -- a pleasant surprise. (The amount may have even been higher had it not been for no-shows who had reservations.) The room Clayton and I had at St. Leonard's was 350 pounds (which we split in half) for the 5 days. I also had two nights alone the preceding weekend in a different room/hotel. Of course, I still had $1130 in airfare expense, airport & train transportation costs, etc.

Due to a low number of bids in 2006, we discussed at the pre-meeting that a bidder only needs to supply a venue & logistics. (It was felt that requiring monetary bid requirements were discouraging bidders.) However, being able to provide financial perks will certainly help get a bid if multiple bids are submitted, and it will assist those coming from overseas. Also, the bidding federation gets to submit a 3rd participant into the tournament.

Richard so you would say that a person could have made this trip comfortably for around $2,000, which covers plane fare, transportation, room and board, site seeing etc.

What you are saying Clayton is that playing checkers does not come cheap (which is not the image that most people have concerning our game). One can see from this posting why other funding sources need to be sought out in order to participant in checker events such as this one--and future funding sources need to be (if possible) put into place to help with this.
