Martin,

You might find it interesting to know that after several attempts to rewrite the operating system from scratch, Microsoft's management core is beginning to believe that a "level of complexity" has arisen that has been "vastly underappreciated" previously.

In other words: there is a remote chance that the level of detail needed to accomplish this task while keeping some backwards compatability might be theoretically impossible, or nearly so.

There is a solution that would require every software vendor on the planet to create new versions of their products (and therefore invest time, manpower, and dollars) but Microsoft is trying to avoid this. The prevailing thinking at the present time is that a worldwide rebuke would occur, and the monies spent to produce the new software would not be recovered for a very, very long time.

It will be interesting to see what happens.

Any bets the first release will be bug free? Anyone?

Checkerboard worked fine under wine version 0.9.17, though i haven't tried to add a bigger database yet.

As for 64 bit os's, i've been running 64-bit gentoo linux for several months and it is very fast. The only issues i've run into are that my wifi driver depended on the windows driver (which took several months to come out) and macromedia has yet to release *any* 64 bit flash player to my knowledge. I've not really done anything special with the os to utilize the extra 32-bits.

I had originally tried a 64 bit windows (this was a little over a year ago) which i think they just called XP 64 and virtually nothing worked. I had basic 800x600 video, no sound, hard wired internet and a browser that crashed often. I've heard that 64 bit vista is much nicer now, but i'm at the point where i think i'll just wait for a stable release.

Hi Jason,

thanks for the update. I'm glad to hear it really works :-)

As for windows-64-bit - I am waiting for a stable release too. As a student, I still had enough time to waste to install all kinds of unstable and useless OSes (like OS/2, for example), just to see if it worked. Now, all I want is something that works, and doesn't waste my time.

cheers
