Which American Champion was so good that once he was stripped of his title because he was accused of being a professional player ?

Re: Title lost
Ingo would this have been a pre-1948 happening?

Yes... and no, because the player lived longer and made his way.
It was not Newell William Banks Lindus, but you r still close.
I am sure the player in question played them both (Ryan and Banks).

Re: Title lost
Was it a sanctioned title? If not I would say Millard Hopper or Tom Wiswell. Asa Long may have found himself in that situation when he was younger.

No.
All were close and might have been worthy opponents of the player in question, but until now his name was not mentioned.
A clue:
he had "more traps to spring at y'a then freckles on his face - and that's something!"

Hellman spent much of his time working in the steel mills, but the young Marion Tinsley who I beleive was the junior champion was around at this time.

No.
Not Tinsley, Long, Hellman, Chamblee, Hunt or Hopper.
But I am sure the player in question played them all.
Chinook?
an unusual try, but yes, Chinook was stipped of its US Championship.
But no, I refer to a player that never played Chinook, but most likely all of the aforementioned players, and Ryan, and Banks, and a few more shining names.
A clue: I never said that the player in question was stripped of his national title. In fact, the incident happened when he was a prodigal player, and he became US Champ quite a few years later.

My good friend Al Darrow, checker historian par-excellance would like to offer "Milton Loew" as his answer to this fine "Checker Trivia" question. Refs. Ryans Checkerist Volume 1, page 70 and Volume 5, pages 8 and 9.
