WHO WAS THIS GUY??

Post by william »

I remember about 22 years ago when I first started poking my nose into checker books and mags the name of a problem composer which aroused my curiosity.

I had been sniffing around endgames in the draughts world mags of the 1920's.

I just recently opened up some of these mags and there was that guy again ( or perhaps girl) .

I am calling out to all historians of checkers .

Could someone tell me what this persons real name was?

His ID was BO'SUN.

I find this very romantic , and i suppose that if my name was something like ERNEST MAC KLEUGER then I probably would have adopted a name along those lines too.

No offense to anyone who is called ERNEST MAC KLEUGER.

Thanks in advance to anyone who can help me with this enquiry

Was Chris Nelson a longshoreman? I think I remember a problem in Wiswell's Science of Checkers and Draughts that says that.

Longshoreman, boatswain?

I think, more likely BO'SUN is refering to Boston. This composer probably lived in Boston.

According to John Meaden in the July 1995 Keystone Checker Review, p. 919, Bosun was P. J. Lee.
Lee's credentials as a Bostonian are not specified.
(Bo'sun is the pronunciation of "Boatswain" - a warrant officer of petty officer in charge of a ship's rigging, anchors, cable, and deck crew - American Heritage Dictionary)

P. J. Lee--(aka. "Bo'sun"), renown American checker critic, problemist, and author was a major contributor to the Draughts Review from 1924-1932. He was also involved with several checker columms in the northwestern United States (he was from Washington State). I refer you to the Draughts Review, Volume 8, #5, page 66 dated May 1932. (Compliments of my esteem friend and checker historian par-excellance Al Darrow).
