"The Egyptians Worshipped Them"--picture--answer

Post by Mr. Checkers »

 With two "Checker Trivia" questions being answered on the very same day. Pretty soon "Inky" will be answering them. Well I guess old age is setting in here or those answering the questions are getting smarter. Well anyway keep up the good work fellows and lets give this one a good try. "Checker Trivia" question of the Day"? Imagine discovering an old checker set buried deep within a pyramid in Egypt. What subject, which the Egyptians worshiped, may one expect to find embossed on these checkers? (Cont.)

Actually, it was a relative of the cat. Or at least there have been draughts sets found with a lion's head carved in each draught. Queen Hatasu's draught set is one of these, according to Falkener in his book, "Games Ancient and Oriental and How to Play them." An extensive section called "Queen Hatasu's Draught Board" describes these and even has a drawing.

Just a guess but I don't think the Pharaoh would have gone into battle without his horse and chariot.

 Now there is a good "Checker Trivia" question for another day. If checkers goes way back to Egypt then why are checker kings not called "Pharaohs"? I will have to give that one some serious thought. Anyway nice guess Whitefork--please try again. (Cont.)

Three possibilities come to mind:

1) The Sun
2) The moon
3) An ibis

But those are just educated guesses.

My first thought was the game "senet", but those pieces do not appear to have any markings.

However, "hounds and jackals" is another. http://www.gustavianum.uu.se/vm/download.html

And I notice that there was a jackal-headed god, too.

 Another fine answer Palomino--please try again. Last night I had a nice visit with my good friend Al Darrow and I posed this question to him. To my surprise he answered it right away.
