"We Need to Become More Aware"

Post by Mr. Checkers »

 I think that we are going to have to become more aware of what is going on within our elderly checker community. Twice in less than a month now I was informed about important checker holdings (that belonged to two former members) being dumped directly into the rubbish bin. One of the problems here is that we seem to forget about or dismiss away our elderly members, whose checker contributions and holdings are virtual treasures of checker knowledge. These former players are unfortunately lost to us forever, which is very sad and hard for some of us to accept. In their memory I think that we as a checker community should at least have tried to save the checker treasures that they left behind. Why that did not happen is a question that I feel needs to be addressed. In the future we may need to focus our attention around issues beyond that which is going on across the checkerboard. "Happy New Year" Ms. Becky

In the 1970s I often found checker books in used book stores. I even found private notebooks by deceased players, with in-depth analysis on particular lines. This was true in Charlottesville, Washington DC and Chicago, and even in other towns where I was visiting.

I very seldom find old checker books in used book stores. Oh, I found Jack Birnman's magazine collection (mostly 100 square Russian, Latvian and Dutch magazines) and recently found one isolated book. And yes, some popular paperbacks are to be found, but many others are nowhere in sight.

And I do not like to order such things through the net or the mail. I like to be at the store, smell the book and then walk out with it. In fact half my joy was in the hunt in those days.

I was lucky enough to get a collection of books to buy left by the late Robert Jameson.I became aware of these through the grapevine, although i didnt know the man personally. Non checker players may well think oh"its just a lot of old numbers "....like an old Tel directory and so is lost forever in the rubbish bin/
Always read "Cannings Compilation 2nd Edition" every day.
