World Qualifier- Vegas 2007

Thanks and Hullo Patrick. One of the things that needs to be improved in checker matches is that everyone is given the right information long before the actual match. In the past, coming over from New Zealand, ive been caught once or twice, particularly in qualifiers with costs i hadnt counted on, and because its very expensive coming over, it puts an added stress on playing.Im sure Kim will have the exact details, and theres no unknown costings this year.

WQ 2007 info

Post by kim willis »

Thank you Jan,In the past yes the expenses has been more than what they have said.I do not want that to happen in 2007.I will tell you that I myself have been working non- stop on getting donations for this WQ so that I can help in food cost, shuttles to and from airport etc. This doesn't seem like much but I also hope to be able to help in room costs, but I will say at this time we have a little over $3000.I hope to have over $5000 by the time Sept comes or more. So don't give up on me :)

Jan,

I talked with Gerry about this and he said he would be working on this in the next few weeks (since he was busy working on the ACF National recently). We may be at the Four Queens hotel for the WQT. The playing room fee will need to be addressed internally by ACF, but may be a non-factor for the players since a qualifier is a smaller crowd and we do not need as big a room (less costly to us). All participants will get a financial kickback (depending on how much is raised minus expenses). All federations participating in WCDF tournament must have $100 (or equivalent) dues paid to Ian Caws or Don Brattin. Also, Jason Solan has just added a WCDF page to this site, so we hope to be adding more info here over the next few months. There is also limited info in the ACF calendar section under "September 2007." Dates are September 17-20 (with 21st reserved in case of a tie).

Thankyou Kim and Richard, for overseas participants, we really need to be booking our flights in the next couple of months to get a good price, it would be good to get room rates as soon as possible,so we can budget.Four Queens is a great hotel, i enjoyed my stay there last time. although ill never get used to noisy air conditioning! lol.The womens world qualifier may be a shorter time than you have mentioned, simply because there may be few participants.Looking forward to catching up with you all again.

I am thinking now about an option to help Kim a bit to collect money. I am wondering - if I annotate QT games (all three ty's) in behalf of WCDF, similar to what I did for ACF National Selected - will there be any takers ?

How about pre-selling ? If anyone is interested to buy a new GAYP book with my annotations - please, respond here.

Yet to the moment, non of the QT games on Barbados, Prague or Stoneheaven got much publicity and annotations. This will be first experience.

The price of book will be around $25-$30, appoximately - 200-250 pages. Book might be ready in 3-6 months after tournaments - spring / summer 2008.

More Checker/Draughts books in 2008 :-)

Post by Alan Millhone »

Hello Patrick and Mr. Alex:

I like the idea of seeing past WCDF WQ games annotated, diagrammed, and made available:-) I would like a copy for my small Checker library.

Patrick in Tennessee in March you will find copies of SIXTH for sale by Mr. Alex, the new 8th. INTERNATIONAL , spiral bound copies of 2006 Medina 'Select' games expertly annotated and full of diagrams available. I still have some copies of 10th. AMERICAN TOURNAMENT . Dr. Beckwith probably has some copies of his OHIOAN YEARBOOK which is full of information, games, diagrams, etc. and another wonderful spiral bound book. Many years passed us by without much being added to our rich Checker literature. That has changed for the better in the last couple of years I am proud to say.

Sincerely:

Hullo Alan, Its strange previous world qualifiers havent been annotated,i myself would have loved to see the Barbados world qualifier annotated, there would be many interesting games in that one,its sad to lose out on that one, so Alex, your offer sounds like a good one.Would you annotate all games, including the womens and the youths, or just the mens?

Hi, Jan,

Yes, Indeed ! I will annotate all three tournaments - Men, Woman and Youth. However - with GAYP style we may have many repeated games or small vary, so - annotations for some games might bigger, for other smaller.

As usually - I plan to use diagrams.

Also - this will be "tournament book", so - all games will be putted in chronological order, round-by-round. I also want to include standings after each round, pairings and final cross-table, which give readers a better picture of competition.

I also will try to put photos here. And certainly, if someone wants to join project - annotate some games or do like Richrad Beckwith memorable "Travel notes" - this all will be included.

All profit from book selling will go to WCDF, and in particular - organisers of Las Vegas 2007 QT events to cover / reduce players expanses.

More later ...

Alex,

That's a very generous offer on your part to take the time to prepare a book, and I would certainly buy a copy given the quality of work you have shown with Sixth and the 2006 Select games.

I doubt I will do a lengthy travelog as I have done in past (since I've already done one on Vegas -- which I would like to re-post someday since we hope to have many new Vegas visitors this year!), but I can do a shorter article strictly focused on the tournament, day-by-day events and atmosphere, etc. Perhaps an international player or other first-time visitor would like to write an article about their impressions of the tournament and Vegas too?

Rich, you "Travel Notes" are trully a literature masterpieces. We can include them alone into book as a separate Chapter, so - they will get longer life and make the whole book more attractive.

Everything in our hands  :P :D
