World Qualifier- Vegas 2007

Thanks Richard and Kim.I think my first trip to Vegas and the wait at the airport was not so much about being stuck there, but what happened there, and you always remember places by the happenings and the people.

I will buy a copy of the book.

As I have complained before, the Barbados Qualifier games dropped into a black hole, and were never seen again. The Prague games were sent to the players, but never annotated. And the Stonehaven games also seem to have fallen into a black hole. It is as if these tournaments were never played. I'll annotate all three of those tournaments in one book, if someone will send me the games. I already have the Prague games.

Yes Jim, im particularly sad the Barbados Qualifier games were lost. When i was there, there were two games that i watched between my games that i was intrigued by,very interesting games. One was between Rawle Adcock and Hugh Devlin which was so complicated it did my head in just watching. The other one was between Michael Holmes and Ron King, where Ron was in a clear loss, and couldnt get into the back row to get a crown, but by an amazing fluke he got the shot and won the game.

Worse Game

Post by Michael Holmes »

I think it was one of the most poorly played games I've seen from the master players in a long time. Ron and I did not play this well at all. My simple oversight on a two for one costed me the Barbados National.

Is there an update on who is going to this WQT?

Below is the poorly played game I had with King.

[Event "2004 Barbados Nat 9-14 24-19 11-15"]
[Date "2004-06-14"]
[Black "Ron King"]
[White "Michael Holmes"]
[Result "1-0"]
1. 9-14 24-19 2. 11-15
27-24 {A standard defiance position} 3. 6-9 22-18 {The only move to keep a small advantage} 4. 15x22 25x18 5. 8-11 24-20 6. 3-8 26-22 7. 9-13 18x9 8. 5x14 22-18 9. 14-17 {A very weak move. 1-5 is only a plus 8 for white. and the the unusual looking 11-16 is good too.} 21x14 10. 10x17 18-14 11. 17-22 23-18 {and I had intended on playing 28-24. White has a very powerful position. I hardly looked at the position when I chose to make this very bad move. 28-24 is the obviously powerhouse move and although it does not win the draw would have been very difficult to find} 12. 11-16 20x11 13. 7x23 28-24 {14-10 here may draw.} 14. 13-17 24-19 15. 17-21 19-15 16. 8-11 15x8 17. 4x11 14-10 18. 12-16 10-7 19. 16-19 18-15 20. 11x18 7-3 21. 19-24 3-8 22. 1-6 8-11 23. 6-10 11-16 24. 24-27 31x24 25. 23-27 32x7 26. 2x27

To me Michael,it wasnt the start of the game or through it that impressed me,it was Rons brilliant shot at the end, that made it memorial to me.

Very costly blunder, Michael ! I perfectly understand your feelings.

The shot at the end doesn't impress me at all, but what really continue impress me for years - "Suki" ability to generate situations where his opponents screw things.

Sincerely,

Alex

Choices

Post by Michael Holmes »

I agree Alex, the choices King makes have been a blessing for him. I know a secret that will now allow me to do the same! Obviously you know it too as you are a World Title Holder!
