Memories of English Open Youth Championship

Post by Lindus Edwards »

The following game is presented for the benefit of young players who hope to follow in the footsteps of the great player William Docherty. The game was played in the English Open Youth Championship in 1981 at Bristol, England and is demonstrative of the ability possessed by two youngsters - then aged about fourteen.
Red: Roger Thompson White: William Docherty.
1. 11-15 23-18 2. 8-11 27-23 3. 10-14 22-17 4. 15x22 17x10 5. 6x15 25x18 6. 15x22 26x17 7.
11-15 24-19 8. 15x24 28x19 9. 4-8 29-25 10. 8-11 17-13 11. 9-14 25-22 12. 7-10 22-18 13.
3-7 18x9 14. 5x14 30-25 15. 2-6 25-22 16. 14-17 21x14 17. 10x26 31x22 18. 11-16 22-18 19.
16-20 32-27 20. 7-10 18-15 21. 12-16 19x12 22. 10x26 Red Win.
Suffice it to say that William would not lose such a game these days! I was proud to have assisted the winner in his training over several years.

I was in the BBS and there were anonymous posters with inappropriate postings. I think the BBS was the victim of the inadvisable policy of allowing open posts without constant moderation. And doing the latter would have been a unreasonably diffiicult job for anybody, so I do not blame anybody but the posters who took advantage of the situation.

If Lindus has a fault it is that he is at times too thin skinned (would that this were the worst fault for all of us).

As for the battle between felinophilliacs and felinophobes, I have both in my family. My oldest child is a cat person, my second is a dog person, my third is a music person, my fourth is a plant person, my physician wife is a symptoms person and I am a numbers person. We have all learned to humor one another and if need be to step to the bathroom or out for some air when another member of the family goes on and on discussing his or her particular affectation.

Finally, I think every checker player has a right to set his or her own level of involvement. For some checkers is their whole life. For others it's a break from whatever else consumes their whole life. I do not think it appropriate to chide anybody for their level of participation. We each choose our vocations and avocations, and checkers may be involved at one level or another.

Alan, I wish we could move Lindus-bashing and Inky-bashing posts to the Broken Boards forum because it is those posts and not Lindus or Inky that bother me. I should mention that Inky does nothing for me, but as far as I'm concerned he can stay in the room as long as I do not have to get too close to cat hair, to which I am allergic (and that is what I tell my daughter when I visit her regarding her cats). And Lindus, know that Gold Token has some very nice forums and checker clubs. I have missed your presence since I left Wyllie's (due to health issues and lack of time) and maybe that would be a congenial place to talk with friends.
