The Legendary Tinsley

Post by chipschap »

Once again, Mr. Richard Pask has honored "The Checker Maven" by allowing me to post his new electronic book, "The Legendary MFT."

This 240 page book is an incredible compilation of the second part of Dr. Marion F. Tinsley's career, with games, annotations, indexes, and far too much more to describe here--- including an introduction by none other than Richard Fortman.

Due to Mr. Pask's generosity the book is offered free to everyone. Go on over to

http://www.checkermaven.com

to download your copy.

Congratulations to Richard Pask on his magnificent new book. Well done Richard! As Richard says, no work such as this can be complete, and I am sure he will not mind if I point out one game that appears to have slipped the net
- WW Coleman v M Tinsley 1957 simultaneous exhibition match - published in North West Draughts Federation Newsletter. Vol 6, Issue 4, June 2004.

I have another (I assume unpublished) game H Boucher v M Tinsley from the 1957/58 exhibition tour, won by Tinsley. The play in it improves on the order of moves given in both Basic Checkers and Solid Checkers, for the opening in question.

Send or take the PDF of the book to your local Kinkos. They have an electronic service for this, I understand. They will make a nice book to your specifications. I know they do comb binding and perfect binding and the prices are fair (not necessarily low) for what you get.

If they don't do hardcover and that's what you want, have Kinkos just print double sided. I was pretty careful to arrange the pages for book printing (though, if you see an error, please let me know and I will correct it). The first and last double sided pages are the front and back covers so have them done on heavier weight paper. Take the loose sheets to a local bindery and they will make a nice hardcover book for you, though it will be expensive, and they can't really do traditional signature binding from single sheets.

If you are really into it you can do your own binding, as we do here. I have a simple press for double-fan gluing and we sometimes do Japanese sewn bindings. It's easier than you think.

I'll be back to you soon, sir! I may need some training and am very interesting. I know - Ron King in his young years had books binding career. I can try to challenge him in this fine business :D

Can you imagine - I do Sixth binding on my own ??? :D

Three thumbs up!
Richard Pask rocks.

ETA - Just back from Kinko's. 24.95 for printing and vello binding, cardstock cover. You can probably get it done cheaper but Kinko's is the closest to home.

Greetings All,
Another way, as I have done myself with several other works , is to get sleeve protectors, along with a nice 3 ring binder. In this case, you can print the work out, and place the pages back to back in the sleeves
( 2 pieces of paper per sleeve), and if you wish, you can purchase a leather bound 3 ring binder, or a cheaper one......probably a one inch binder in this case....I have not done it yet with this book, but that is my plan.
These, when completed are very practical, as, when using it for study, the pages are wide open, and if you want to make any notations, you can make them on the sleeves with a marker, let the marker dry for a few seconds, and on you go....If you find at a later date that you made faulty notations, just change the sleeve...!!!!
And, you will find during perusal, that this just out and out LOOKS GOOD !!!! A package of 200 sleeves at Office max, or Staples costs $11.00- 13.00. A decent 3 ring 1 inch binder might cost you $7.00-8.00....for twenty dollars, you cannot beat it.....try it, you will not be disappointed...!
Regards,
Jay
