Games with Don DeWeber

Post by Alex_Moiseyev »

I decided to create a separate topic, because find these games quite interesting, and don't want them to be missed and putted in garbage can as result of overriding by all these miserable posts

Hi, Lindus ! Yes, I never had a pleasure to meet with Ms. Becky at checkers tournament, however I am deighted to say, that it was honored for me to meet my friend, Mr. Don DeWeber once in official checkers tournament. It was my first draughts event ever, back to summer 1996, when I visited club in New Castle, Pennsylvania, and joined with my long life friends - Tony Kozenski and Don DeWeber. In September, 1996 they invited me to play in OH State tournament, 1996, and I accepted their offer !

It was so unusual, interesting and so many fun - I will always remember.

Here are my games with Mr. DeWeber. I didn't record rounds and don't know - it was exactly my official tournament games #1/#2, or not.

G1. A. Moiseyev vs D. DeWeber
OH State ty, 1996, Massilon

11-15 22-17 9-13 17-14 10-17 21-14 6-9 (A) 25-21 9-18 23-14 8-11 29-25 4-8 24-19 15-24 28-19 11-16 27-23 8-11 (B) 25-22 16-20 19-16 12-19 23-16 2-6 16-12 6-10 30-25 10-17 21-14 11-15 25-21 7-11 14-10 5-9 22-17 13-22 26-17 9-13 17-14 15-18 14-9 18-22 9-6 22-25 6-2 25-30 2-7 11-15 7-11 15-18 11-7 18-22 7-11 22-25 11-15 25-29 15-11 29-25 11-7 25-22 7-11 22-18 11-7 13-17 and after several moves Red Wins

A. LOL ... After 10 years in draughts things look different.

B. After this nasty wasting move red position immediately becomes critical, if not a lost. 1-6 instead would be correct

C. Interesting situation. See diagram #1. It is obvious that 19-16 trade erase white winning chances, but the most important question here - could white win by 32-27 ? My intuition says - YES.

#1. A. Moiseyev vs D. DeWeber
Image
White to move (32-27*)

G2. D. DeWeber vs A. Moiseyev
OH State ty, 1996, Massilon

11-15 22-17 9-13 17-14 10-17 21-14 8-11 23-19 15-18 26-23 4-8 24-20 13-17 31-26 17-21 19-15 6-9 (A) 28-24 9-13 23-19 2-6 15-10 6-15 19-10 11-15 (B) 25-22 18-25 29-22 8-11 27-23 White Wins

A. I think Don missed a a pretty win at this point - 12-16!. See diagram #2.

B. Strange enough, but even at this point draw was still in hands - 12-16!

#2. D. DeWeber vs A. Moiseyev

12-16! wins

Alex on behalf of Mr. Checkers I would personally like to thank you for your kind posting of these two fine games and comments, which bring back a lot of wonderful memories for him spent with good friends like Tony, Louis, Ed, Fernie, Elbert, Tim, yourself and many others. I know that he travelled over 350,000 miles during the 1990's going back and forth to Pennsylvania--stopping at every antique store, flea market, along the way searching for checker memorabilia for his museum. Interestingly enough it was a lady that first invited him to visit her in Pennsylvania and then Tony heard that he was in the area so he invited Mr. Checkers to come to visit the New Castle Chess and Checkers Club. And that lead to 70 more trips back and forth because Mr. Checkers loved the people that he meant there', plus he found that there were thousands of antiques stores there--everytime he came home his car was loaded with checker things that he had found. The Pennsylvania logo at that time as I recall was--"You Have A Friend In Pennsylvania". Mr. Checkers sure found that to be true. He will also remember the game that he beat you using 2" catalin checkers that he had picked up that day at some antique store. The name Mr. Checkers was given to him by the many antique dealers who knew exactly what he was looking for when they saw him coming. They would say "Here comes Mr. Checkers"--and the rest is history. Ms. Becky

Unfortunately - I don't have more games, where I had a pleasure to play with Mr. Checkers in tournaments (I wish - I have them alot !). I have ALL my tournament games recorded since I started to play checkers in 1996 (in total 1500-1800), and one day - all of them will be published and delivered to draughts fraturnity.

Ms. Becky, I can tell you a secret - SIXTH is not a name of single book, and buyers will be surprise to find on the front cover in small letters: Volume #1.

SIXTH - name of series book, which will be publish in the next 30-40 years, until I remain active in checkers. Everyone will be able to see my progress (regress ? ) in checkers. This will be "life time multi-volume" series.

The main message I am trying to deliver in checkers for years: Everyone can do this ! I really don't like and hate to hear: "Alex Moiseyev is untouchable", or "Ron King is untouchable". This is completely wrong. Everyone is touchable, and everyone can get to this level or close, if love the game, study and work hard to improve.

Back to our game ... I regret to say this fine game did not come a part of SIXTH, due to the fact - I was in lost ! However - I plan to write another book: "Lets play and lose with Alex !" and this game will certainly be #1 :P here. I think - as of today this fine collection of games, which I lost or was in lost should have about 150 games.

Even this year, 2005, from 180 tournament and match games. this number is around 16 or so. I lost to Gene Lindsay in NC ty, 1 game to Richard Beckwith in OH match, 1 game to Richard Hallett in National, 3 games to Ron King in World match, was also in lost in 2-3 other games with Ron King and 4 games with Richard Beckwith. Number of games where I was in lost in other tys - is about 2-3.

16 losing games in year by World Champion is quite good number !

However ... results of SIXTH sales, financial deals and aspects will have serious influence on my next books. If sale of SIXTH will be successful enough (I am sure) - I will continue this business, if not - ...

I want to remind everyone - in purpose to minimize expanses, the total number of all SIXTH copies which will be printed is limited.

Regards,

Alex

Games he should have lost

Another position he should have lost:

From the IDA Newsletter Vol 1 No 1 December 2006

EVEN HOMER NODS

A Moiseyev

N Grosvenor

White to play and win.

In the 2001 American Freestyle Championship, A Moiseyev strayed into this position (as Black) with White to play. White continued with 28-24? to an eventual Black win.
Can you spot the golden opportunity that White overlooked?
This position also occurred, between J A Montague and G Buchanan,
in the 1903 Scottish Tourney, with Buchanan finding the winning move.

Lindus, these games have only historical values today ... at least on my part. OH State Checkers Ty 1996 in September was my first official English Draughts tournament without any prior experience or knoweldges. Only calculations and visualization was available at the moment, and a little bit common sense

In other hands Don Deweber never pretend to be a strong player, and never named himself as such person. I agree with your comments, that both players did alot of mistakes in these games, but I posted them just for curiosity, and also somone said that he never played checkers, which is certainly not true.

These games is a good memory for both of us, me and Don, and remind these couple wonderful beautiful weekend days in Massilon

Sincerely,

Alex
