Just looking over the ACF ratings and i see quite alot of dead-wood in there. By that i mean players who havent had their ratings updated or maybe havent played since 4-5 yrs ago or maybe more in some cases.
This seems to give a slightly inaccurate position of players who are actually trying to rise in the ratings(if you like that kinda thing) but are still positioned behind players who may well have retired, stop playing or are not doing ranking Tys anymore!!. Can anyone explain how that works.

Re: Ratings
tommy,I think alot of it is some tmts arent sent in for ratings. Its really up to the players to get the results in, or push to have it done. Some players just like to play and dont care one way or other about ratings. Coming from a chess background both as a player and tmt director,if it wasnt a rated tmt players wouldnt come just to play. And if all the players werent in the us chess federation the tmt director had to pay their membership fee in order for the tmt to be reported and be allowed to direct a offical tmt again. Rated tmts are held almost everyweekend either at chess clubs or different events,Back it my younger days I played in a rated tmt every weekend!!!
Re: Ratings
m stewart..........Im talking abt the ratings lists that exists.
I realise that wat you say is true and all Tys are not reported.

Re: Ratings
tommy some of the dead wood may be people who are still very active but havent played in any rated tmts.
Re: Ratings
Yes thats my point MStewart,as you know there is an A and a B list.Ithink there ought to be a point if they havent played a rated Ty for so long these names should be put on the "B" list.

ACF, HELLO !!!
For few years in the past I was asking several people - if anyone saw recently or have any news about Paul Davis. He made a double once by winning USA National GAYP and 3 moves. He aso one time played a 3-move World Match vs Marion Tinsley in 1988.
His name is in ACF and WCDF rating list, although awarded by GM title.
Last time I played with him in VA State Open 1998 and it was a last time when he was shown at checkers event. It is almost 10 years since then, and he I beleive he was in his earlier 70's 10 years ago.
Does anyone now has any news about this great player, or some information - address / phone / etc ???
ACF, HELLO !!!
Sincerely,
Alex Moiseyev

The good outcome of my call is obvious - someone replied on my call and identified himself as Paul Davis
I still hope that Mr. Millhone or Dr. Beckwith (or someone else) other day call him.

Re: Ratings
Hey Alex,
I gave Mr. Davis a call to let him know it had been you that called him.
We had a very nice conversation, he is a very nice man and he was happy to learn that it had been you who called him. He seemed very happy to learn he has been awarded the GM title by the WCDF.
He shared some stories with me of things I was unaware of. He told me he first became interested in seriously playing checkers after beginning to play with some Akron, Ohio firemen at there firehouse. He was working at an Akron factory building airplanes during WW II. He was introduced to and played with the Ohio State Champion, J. L. Wilson and just kept playing. He told me of playing in his first National at Cedar Piont about 1944 or 1945 he said.
Alex, he was sorry he wasn't able to understand you and as I said didn't know it was you that had called, he fondly remembered his games with you during the Virginia Sate Open Ty. When I read to him what you had written about his winning the GAYP and 3-Move Nationals and his World Championship Match with Tinsley he reminisced about his first WCM (GAYP) with Don Lafferty in 1984, played in Elizabethtown, KY http://www.nemesis.info/1984%20Lafferty-Davis.htm and his 3-Move WCM with Tinsley at the ICHF in Petal in 1989. http://www.nemesis.info/1989%20Tinsley-Davis.htm He also told me that he had played for the US team in 1989 against GB in the 5th International Match where he only lost one game and that was to D. Oldbury.
He told me that he met Gene Lindsay when Gene first began to play and that for a long time Gene would drive to his home in Virginia about an hour away from Morristown, TN each week to play with him. He still gets calls from Gene from time to time and was delighted to learn that Gene had recently won the Danish Open.
Alex, he told me he was looking forward to getting your book, SIXTH, Vol. 1 some day and reading it. He very much appreciated the fact you remembered him fondly.
He told me both he and his wife have had some health issues recently, I believe knowing you have been thinking of him and our calls brighten his day.
Regards, "Pal"
BTW:
He told me he was born in 1919 (88 years old).

Pal, thanks alot for your help. I am very happy to hear these great news.

It's OK. Usually people have some shock when they hear my accent first time. Not a big deal. When I communicate with someone for long time - they don't have any troubles to understand me. As a matter of fact - they learn my English, not me !

Opps, I missed that one !

I will mail SIXTH to him this week with message and autograph.

Just simple thing, one phone call, but makes alot of people feel much better, including myself !
Thanks again, Pal and Mr. Checkers !
Sincerely,
Alex
Re: Ratings
Yes Alex,
Making a phone call is a simple thing and I was very happy to help out by doing so, it was very much my pleasure and honor to call him. For all that Mr. Davis has accomplished during his career as a player I found him to be a very humble, unassuming man, it was like talking to an old friend.
