CheckerBoard 8-piece database
CheckerBoard 8-piece database
Has anyone recently tried to download CheckerBoard 8-piece database? I find the setup for Checkerboard works fine and builds the 6-piece. When I try to download, unzip and extract 7 & 8 to the db folder everything works fine but when I run KingRow it will use only the 7db but Cake will crash. I remove the 7db & 8db and everything runs fine. Naturally if you don't have 7db you can't run 8db. I have only one CB program installed in Program Files where it defaults if you don't select a location. I have the CD's from Bob Newell. I changed computers and move the db folder into the new version of CB, then I noticed I was only loading up to the 7db, so I used control panel - system remove program and deleted everything and downloaded again. I went to the newest version of CB and Cake Manchester 1.09d and KingRow 1.16C I will only use the 6db until someone can advise. Is it the new version or maybe the 7db download is corrupted. Thanks in advance for the help.

I did complete refresh Cake & KR & CB at the end of 2006 in december and it worked fine for me. I downloaded all software and 8pc db without any problems.

Hi JR,
If you're still having trouble with the cake 8pc db, I can help. Email me your kingsrow.log file after you do the first search and we can go from there.

I'm convinced it is not the CB download, cake program or KR. I have installed it on two PC after I posted the above. Its got to be something to do with my upgrading RAM memory?

I got this email back from Ed,
Hi JR,
I can see what your problem is. Your "Endgame DB Memory" setting is too high under Engine Options. With XP Home edition, no single program can use more than 2GB of RAM. Drop the setting back to around 1536mb. That should work, and if that works you can try bumping it up a bit more, but you probably will not be able to get too far past 1600mb. This is with kingsrow. With Cake you will not be able to use more than about 1000, and you may find that it has to be even slightly less than that.
One other thing, you may have to increase your Virtual Memory setting in Window Control Panel. But its likely you wont have to. If you still have trouble we can try that next. But your setting of 3000 will not work on XP-home. If you had XP-64 bit version you could use it, and if you had XP-32 bit Pro you could get it up to about 2600 by specifying a /3GB switch in your boot.ini windows file.

I followed the recommendation and it solved my problem. Now after being reminded... I recall hearing this from someone else, apparently it did register. I figured if you could install 4 gig of ram in the PC, it could use it... stupid me! Thanks for this forum and the wonderful people that post and share their knowledge.
